The Importance of Reading The Hindu Editorial: Reading The Hindu newspaper has several benefits, including improving reading skills, facilitating comprehension, staying informed of current events, enhancing essay writing, and more. Gaps in India’s education system

  • According to the Annual Status of Education Report, titled ‘ASER 2023: Beyond Basics’ surveyed by civil society organization Pratham,more than half of rural students aged between 14 to 18 are struggling with basic mathematics skills.
  • These basic mathematics skills can be acquired by students from class 3rd to 4th, but according to the report more than half rural students lack basic mathematics knowledge.
  • This survey was conducted in 28 districts across 26 states and there were around 34,745 students in this survey to whom foundational reading and arithmetic abilities was assessed during the survey.
  • Further the report asserted 25% of rural students aged between 14 to 18 can not read a class 2 level text in their mother tongue.
  • According to the report boys are better than girls when it comes to arithmetic and English reading.
  • Around 86.8% students among this age group are enrolled in educational institutions but the gaps as they grow older can be found as 3.9% students aged between 14 to 18 don’t go school, the number increases to 32.6% for 18 years old students.
  • Girls are fewer than boys who opt science stream(28.1% girls and 36.3% boys).
  • The number of students who choose private tuition classes went up from 25% to 30% from 2018 to 2022 respectively.
  • In the survey,around 90% of youngsters have a smartphone and they know how to use it with the lack of knowledge about online safety settings.
  • The aim of National Education Policy 2020 is to “achieve universal foundational literacy and numeracy in primary school by 2025” can be turned into reality when these gaps are filled.
