HIV/AIDS and India’s response

• On 1st April 2004, India had launched Free Antiretroviral Therapy as the response to the HIV/AIDS epidemic. From that time, 1st April marks a significant day.
• The Free Antiretroviral Therapy (ART) had been launched for the persons living with HIV. This Therapy has been proved one of the successful initiatives for the treatment of HIV and AIDS epidemic.
• In the early 1980s when HIV/AIDS had emerged in India, this disease was considered as lethal and associated with fear, stigma and discrimination.
• In 2000, the world leaders issued a declaration at the United Nations General Assembly’s Millennium Summit, to prevent the disease and also reverse the effect of this disease.
• In 2002, to address the universal access to HIV/AIDS prevention, treatment and Services to support the patients, The Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria was launched.
• One of the main concerns about the Antiretroviral Therapy is that this Therapy is costly so that it can’t be accessible for everyone disregarding their financial conditions.
• That’s why the decision to provide Free Antiretroviral Therapy in India is a path breaking decision.
• However Antiretroviral Therapy alone can’t be sufficient to end HIV and AIDS. There are some other complementary initiatives in India that have accelerated the speed of halting the HIV epidemic such as provisions of Free diagnosis facilities, prevention of transmission along with that prevention, diagnosis and treatment of other opportunistic diseases such as Tuberculosis.
• There are also some challenges that persist on the way of halting the HIV epidemic such as delayed enrolment of Antiretroviral Therapy.
• Second challenge is the behavior of patients towards Antiretroviral Therapy, as soon as they start feeling well they start to miss doses of medicine and completely drop out.
• Other challenges are the availability of ART needs to be ensured by the National programme, the private sector engagement, need for constant training and capacity building, strengthening Integration and reducing preventable morality.
