  • The finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman is going to present the sixth budget in a row, here five annual budgets and one interim budget, today on 1st Feb 2024.
  • She set a record to present five annual and one interim budget in a row and match Morarji Desai’s record. He had presented five annual budgets and one interim budget between 1959 and 1964.
  • Before presenting the interim budget 2024, the finance minister released a report describing the growth of the country in 10 years. According to that report India’s GDP in 2024-25 will close to 7% with “considerable scope” and there are high chances that by 2030 the country’s GDP will reach 7% mark.
  • Nirmala Sitharaman will surpass the record of Manmohan Singh, Arun Jaitley, P. Chidambaram, and Yashwant Sinha, who had presented five budgets in a row.
  • Major announcement in the 2023 budget was the increased limit of paying income tax which increased to 7 lakh.
  • Interim budget is presented before the general election which is going to happen in 2024-25 and the annual budget is the full fledged budget for next fiscal year.
  • The fiscal deficit of 5.9% for this fiscal year is likely to be achieved. The budget would focus more on infrastructure which is the backbone of robust economic growth.
  • This interim budget is also important for the current government for electoral purposes. Farmers and women are electrolly significant segments of the economy, this interim budget must have a place for them.
