The police have filed a case citing criminal negligence. The Ministry of Civil Aviation has instructed all airports to conduct comprehensive inspections of their buildings’ structural integrity within a timeframe of two to five days.

  • One person lost their life, and six others were injured when the canopy above the forecourt at Terminal 1 of Indira Gandhi International Airport collapsed onto cars after heavy rain in New Delhi on Friday. At least four cars were damaged. Flights arriving and departing from the terminal were canceled, and the police have registered a case of criminal negligence.
  • The police stated that the deceased was a cab driver. The airport was privatized in 2006.
  • According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), areas of Delhi near the airport recorded a massive 228.1 mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours. This was an all-time record for single-day rainfall in June for Delhi.
  • The Ministry of Civil Aviation has appointed a team from the Indian Institute of Technology-Delhi to investigate the cause of the collapse. It has additionally urged all airports to carry out a comprehensive assessment of their buildings’ structural integrity within a span of two to five days.
  • “Due to the rain, it was hard to grasp what was going on. Mostly cab drivers were running around with their cabs on the road. I was also running when a piece of the roof fell on my head,” recounted Santosh Kumar Yadav, a private cab driver who suffered head injuries during the incident.
  • The incident occurred around 5 a.m. outside the departure section of Terminal 1, a two-story building with arrivals on the ground floor and departures on the first floor. The departure section of Terminal 1 was inaugurated by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in March 2024. However, Minister of Civil Aviation Rammohan Naidu stated that the forecourt area was not part of the renovated building.
  • IndiGo canceled 115 flights, while SpiceJet canceled eight flights, with both airlines offering free refunds to affected passengers. IndiGo will move its Terminal 1 flights to Terminals 2 and 3, while SpiceJet will shift its flights to Terminal 2 until the IIT-Delhi team completes its investigation into the collapse and Terminal 1 is reopened.
  • The airport has provided ₹20 lakh as ex-gratia compensation for the family of the deceased and ₹3 lakh for the injured. The government has also instructed airlines to prevent any abnormal increase in airfares for Delhi flights following the cancellations on Friday.
  • Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) is majority-owned by GMR Airports Limited, holding a 64% stake. The Airports Authority of India owns 26%, with the remaining 10% owned by Fraport AG Frankfurt Airport Services Worldwide.
  • The Delhi Police lodged a case under Sections 304A (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 337 (causing hurt by act endangering life or personal safety of others) of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) against unknown persons.

Turmoil in Parliament as the Opposition brought up the NEET-UG issue

  • The controversy surrounding alleged irregularities in the conduct of the NEET examination caused upheaval in both Houses of Parliament on Friday. The Lok Sabha was adjourned for the day after Speaker Om Birla rejected adjournment motions related to the issue.
  • During the Rajya Sabha’s debate on the Motion of Thanks to the President for her address to Parliament, dramatic moments unfolded as Congress MP Phulo Devi Netam collapsed in the House while protesting with other Opposition MPs who were pressing for a discussion on the exam under Rule 267.
  • In an unusual occurrence, Mallikarjun Kharge, the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Rajya Sabha and Congress chief, was observed walking into the well of the House. Chairman Jagdeep Dhankhar expressed his dismay over this, stating it was the first time in history that the LoP had entered the well of the House. However, Congress chief whip Jairam Ramesh promptly refuted this claim.
  • In the Lok Sabha, Leader of the Opposition Rahul Gandhi raised the issue of NEET right after Mr. Birla announced the obituaries of 13 former MPs. “We intended to convey a unified message to the students of India from both the Opposition and the government that we recognize the importance of this issue. To show our respect to the students, we will hold a dedicated discussion on NEET,” he stated.
  • The chair did not allow him to deliver an extended speech, advising him to address the NEET issue during the Motion of Thanks. Congress MPs then claimed that Mr. Gandhi’s microphone was switched off.
  • “I’ve stated previously that I don’t possess a button here to deactivate the microphone,” Mr. Birla informed the House.
  • Birla and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju informed Opposition members that they could discuss the NEET issue during the debate on the Motion of Thanks.
  • With Opposition members adamant on their demand for a discussion on NEET, the House was adjourned until noon, only to witness similar scenes upon reconvening. Mr. Birla emphasized the necessity of adhering to parliamentary norms and the formation of committees.
  • The entire Opposition, including the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), which is not aligned with the INDIA bloc, walked out in protest because the Rajya Sabha was not adjourned immediately after Ms. Netam collapsed in the well of the House. Rajya Sabha chairman Mr. Dhankhar commented that it was the first time in history the Leader of the Opposition had entered the well of the House, calling it the “most serious desecration that could occur in this temple of democracy.”

Principal of Jharkhand school arrested in NEET paper leak case

CBI arrests Oasis School head Ahsanul Haque and vice-principal Imtiaz Alam; six others from the state are detained. Haque confessed that the question paper envelope had been tampered with.

  • The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) arrested a school principal and vice-principal in Jharkhand on Friday, one day after apprehending two individuals from Patna in the NEET-UG paper leak case.
  • CBI officials detained Oasis School principal Ahsanul Haque and vice-principal Imtiaz Alam, who also served as the exam centre coordinator, and swiftly transported them to Patna late at night.
  • The agency also detained six other individuals from Jharkhand for questioning. Since the beginning, the school in Hazaribagh has been central to the paper leak controversy. Earlier, Bihar police stated that a partially burnt question paper found at a play school in Patna matched the question paper issued by the National Testing Agency (NTA) for the medical entrance exam. They elaborated that this set of question papers had been dispatched to the NEET-UG examination center located at Oasis School.
  • On Wednesday, the CBI interrogated officials from SBI and the courier company responsible for transporting the NEET question papers.
  • Four days ago, speaking with The Hindu, Mr. Haque acknowledged that the box and envelope containing the NEET question papers had been tampered with. He explained that the digital lock was supposed to open automatically at 1:15 p.m. on May 5th, the day of the examination. However, when it failed to open, it was discovered that the outer box had been cut open with a cutter. He admitted that the envelope inside the box had also been tampered with, showing a precise cut.
  • Sources indicate that the vice-principal was also involved in the case. It was discovered that the question papers were transported from SBI to the school in Mr. Alam’s SUV. On Thursday, electronic devices, including a printer from the principal’s office, were confiscated from Oasis School, as per CBI sources.
  • On Friday morning, an eight-member CBI team accompanied Mr. Haque and Mr. Alam to the school, where they were interrogated for three hours. The NEET question papers were delivered to the bank by Blue Dart courier company using an e-rickshaw on May 3rd. The same papers were then delivered from the bank to the school on May 5th. CBI sources mentioned that the agency also interviewed the e-rickshaw driver who delivered the question papers to the bank.
