The hyper politicization of Indian education

  • It has been always observed that the higher education in India is influenced by the politicians; moreover some politicians started building colleges and universities to enhance their career.
  • Many important decisions such as the name changing, the transfer and appointment of vice chancellors, and other important authorities are influenced by politics.
  • However there is still freedom of speech and many other rights given and performed by teachers in the universities.
  • It is more accurate to say that Indian higher education is fundamentally influenced by politics. This is the major concern for universities and higher educational institutions.
  • There are many examples when the higher authorities of Indian higher education institutes have been changed by the ruling parties.
  • Self censorship has become a problem for senior academics especially in the field of social science and humanities to publish their work because they are usually afraid that their work might affect the ruling parties.
  • Some journals that are well known for their independent work are off limits. There are even some students who often face politics in their colleges and universities.
  • We are well aware that an independent and free academic sector is very important for any country’s development. There must be freedom to speech, publish and write in the academic field to build a better civic society.
