Amoeba Found in Kozhikode Well Water Linked to Brain Infection
- Health workers in Kerala have found Naegleria fowleri, a dangerous amoeba that causes a rare brain disease called primary amoebic meningoencephalitis (PAM), in the well water of a house in Kozhikode. The well belongs to the family of a three-month-old baby who is getting treatment at Kozhikode Government Medical College.
- The baby has been under treatment for more than two weeks. Officials also said that water samples were taken from the houses of two other patients – a 40-year-old man and a nine-year-old girl – to check for the same infection.
- Sadly, the nine-year-old girl from Thamarassery died recently from the infection. The 40-year-old man is still being treated in the same hospital. This has created fear that the infection may be spreading through water.
- The girl’s brother also developed fever and was kept under watch by health officials. Doctors said he has not yet shown any other signs of the brain infection, but they are being careful.
Heavy Rains in Maharashtra Kill 15, Cause Major Disruptions
- Maharashtra has been facing nonstop heavy rains for two straight days, which has killed 15 people, disturbed flights and train services, and destroyed crops on about 14 lakh acres of farmland.
- Seven people died across the state on Monday, but Tuesday was worse as eight people died in Nanded district alone, showing how serious the situation is in different parts of Maharashtra.
- Mumbai received 350 millimetres of rain in just 24 hours. Nearly 350 people had to be rescued after the Mithi river rose to dangerous levels, putting nearby areas at risk.
- Trains were badly affected. Many passengers were stuck for hours at big stations like Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, Dadar, Kalyan, and Thane, causing huge problems for daily travel.
- Two monorail trains carrying around 800 passengers also stopped midway because of the rain. Around 580 people were trapped between Mysore Colony and Bhakti Park, and about 200 more were stuck at another place.
- The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation’s fire team brought all the passengers out safely. But eight passengers had to be admitted to hospital after feeling suffocated, as the train was overcrowded due to other transport not working.
- The Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority said the monorail problem happened because of extra weight. The train’s limit was 104 tonnes, but it was carrying 109 tonnes, which damaged the power connection.
- Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said an inquiry will be held into the monorail trouble. He also said that the flood situation was under control, but described the rains in Nanded as being like a sudden cloudburst that killed eight people.
- The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) stayed on high alert as many rivers rose close to the danger mark. The Mithi river even crossed its limit for a short time, flooding parts of Dharavi, one of the world’s most crowded places.
- Many local and express trains were cancelled or altered by Central Railway. Help desks were set up at stations to guide stranded passengers.
- Air travel was also badly disturbed. At least eight flights were diverted from Mumbai airport – six of them from IndiGo, one from SpiceJet, and one from Air India.
Ex-Supreme Court Judge Named Opposition’s Choice for Vice President
- All Opposition parties have selected former Supreme Court judge B. Sudershan Reddy as their common candidate for the Vice-President election. Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge said this contest is more than an election – it is a fight of ideas to safeguard democracy.
- Kharge said Opposition parties are standing together to support Justice Reddy whenever they feel the Constitution and democracy are in danger from those in power.
- Justice Reddy reached New Delhi on Tuesday evening and was welcomed by Opposition MPs. He will file his nomination papers on August 21 after a meeting at Samvidhan Sadan’s Central Hall.
- In a surprising move, the Aam Aadmi Party, which was no longer part of the INDIA group, has extended its support to Justice Reddy. This has given the Opposition more strength and shown that the contest is being taken seriously.
- Justice Reddy, who is 79 years old, had earlier led a committee for Telangana’s caste survey, was the first Lokayukta of Goa, and is now on the board of Hyderabad’s International Arbitration and Mediation Centre.
- He began his judicial journey in 1995 as a judge at the Andhra Pradesh High Court, went on to become the Chief Justice of the Gauhati High Court in 2005, and was promoted to the Supreme Court in 2007.
- Kharge read out a joint statement saying this election is an ideological contest. He said Justice Reddy stands for the values of India’s freedom struggle, Constitution, and democracy – things which the Opposition claims are being weakened today.
- The Opposition is trying to show a strong difference between the ruling NDA’s candidate, Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, who is a former BJP leader with RSS links, and Justice Reddy, who represents constitutional values and justice.
- Rahul Gandhi said that Justice Reddy is a respected jurist who represents the true spirit of the Constitution, protecting equality, rights, and democracy. He added that the Opposition is fully united behind him in this ideological fight.
- Political experts also say this election is about regional identity too. The NDA candidate Radhakrishnan comes from Tamil Nadu, while Justice Reddy comes from Andhra Pradesh. This makes it difficult for big Andhra and Telangana parties like TDP, YSRCP, and BRS to oppose him.
- This has turned the election into a “South vs South” contest, with one side highlighting Telugu pride and the other side Tamil roots, creating tricky situations for many southern parties.
- Before the announcement, leaders including Sharad Pawar, Kanimozhi, Derek O’Brien, M.A. Baby, and Dharmendra Yadav gathered at Kharge’s residence to finalize the decision of putting forward Justice Reddy.
