  • The king cobra, previously thought to be a single species (Ophiophagus hannah), was first classified in 1836 by Danish naturalist Theodore Edward Cantor.
  • DNA mapping and extensive sampling identified four king cobra lineages: Western Ghats, Indo-Chinese, Indo-Malaysian, and Luzon Island in the Philippines.
  • The Western Ghats lineage (Kaalinga) and Luzon Island lineage (Salvatana) will be formally named in Bengaluru on November 22, 2024.
  • Shankar’s research, published in the European Journal of Taxonomy in September, highlighted genetic differences between Kaalinga and other Indian king cobras.
  • Over 200 samples were collected across regions to analyze genetic variations, making it the first major genetic study of king cobras in 186 years.
  • Shankar’s interest in king cobras intensified after surviving a bite in 2005, despite his body rejecting anti-venom from Thailand.
