NISAR Launch on July 30 Marks First NASA-ISRO Satellite Partnership

  • NISAR, the first joint satellite by NASA and ISRO, is set to launch on July 30 at 5.40 p.m. from Sriharikota’s Satish Dhawan Space Centre aboard the GSLV-F16 rocket.
  • The rocket will place the Synthetic Aperture Radar satellite into a 743-km sun-synchronous orbit at an angle of 98.4 degrees, so it can cover the entire earth regularly for observations.
  • Weighing 2,392 kg, NISAR is a special earth observation satellite using two radar frequencies — NASA’s L-band and ISRO’s S-band — with NASA’s large 12m foldable mesh antenna.
  • This 12m antenna is attached to ISRO’s modified I3K satellite bus, combining technologies of both agencies to study and monitor global environmental and geophysical changes accurately.
  • NISAR will observe a swathe of 242 km in great detail, applying SweepSAR technology for the first time to expand its coverage and accurately track movements on the earth’s surface.
  • It will scan the globe and provide data day and night in all weather every 12 days, helping in mapping deformations, ice sheet movements, and monitoring changes in forests and crops.
  • The satellite can detect even small changes on earth’s surface and will be useful for classifying sea ice, finding ships, monitoring coastlines, studying storms, soil moisture, and disasters.
  • This launch shows strong cooperation between ISRO and NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, developed over many years, marking an important step in earth observation and international space partnership.
