A vegetable triumvirate and inflation

• To know any country’s economic health and cost of living,inflation is an important indicator.
• We all know that in India we use Consumer Price Index CPI to measure the inflation around the country. CPI is based on the Laspeyres’s price index.
• There are around 299 items in the basket of CPI in which 6.04 percent weightage of vegetables.
• There are three vegetables that hold a significant part around 2.2 percent in the overall CPI basket for an average Indian household. These three vegetables are tomato, onion and potato.
• These vegetables are also important because these have played a pivotal role in influencing the inflation of both food and beverages.
• In this fiscal year, the vegetable prices in India increased around 15 percent compared to last year.
• Along with the hike in prices, they exhibit significant volatility. As an example, in the month of June the prices drastically fell by 0.7 percent and in the month of July it witnessed a hike of 37.4 percent.
• Even though the vegetables have only 6 percent weightage in the CPI basket,they have contributed to 30 percent in inflation in the months of February and March 2024.
• There is a need for policy Intervention and an understanding of the agricultural supply chain to control inflation , especially in vegetables.
