Core industrial growth reaches a record high of 7.9%
- India’s core industries recorded a sharp rise in growth to a record 7.9% in September 2026. This increase was mainly due to a recovery in the coal sector and higher production in the refinery products and iron ore sectors.
- According to the latest data on the Index of Core Industries, the growth recorded in September 2026 was the highest since at least April 2024. April 2024 is the earliest month for which data is available under the new series.
- Although comparing the new series with the old series is not fully reliable from a statistical point of view, the old series still helps us understand the current growth rate. When compared with the old series, the growth recorded in September 2026 was the highest in nearly three years.
- The coal sector grew by 10.7% in September 2026. However, this high growth was partly because coal production had fallen by 1.1% in September last year, making the comparison easier this time. Despite this effect, the coal sector recorded its highest growth in 13 months.
- The refinery products sector also performed better than expected. Its growth increased to 10.3% in September 2026 from 5.6% in August 2026. However, even after including this unusually high growth in September, the sector’s average growth during the first six months of the current financial year was only 1%.
- The iron ore sector has been recording strong growth of more than 10% for nearly a year. It continued this trend in September 2026, with growth reaching 18.4%. However, this was only the highest growth recorded in the last two months.
- Aditi Nayar, Chief Economist at ICRA, said that coal and iron ore production grew much faster in September 2026 than in August 2026 when compared with the same months of the previous year. She explained that this improvement was partly due to lower production in the previous year. However, the increase in coal production compared with the previous month was also quite strong because coal stocks at power plants were low.
- The electricity sector also continued to perform well, growing by 11.4% in September 2026. However, its growth was slightly lower than the 13.1% recorded in August 2026.
- The two industries linked to construction, cement and steel, also performed well in September 2026. Growth in the steel sector increased to 4.9%, while the cement sector recorded a fairly strong growth rate of 9.8%. However, cement sector growth was slower than it had been in August 2026.
- The domestic crude oil sector recorded a decline of 1.4% in September 2026. However, this was a smaller decline than the 3.6% fall recorded in August 2026, showing that the sector’s performance had improved slightly.
- The natural gas sector also recorded a decline in production, falling by 4.6% in September 2026. However, this decline was slightly smaller than the 4.9% fall recorded in August 2026.
- The fertilizer sector recorded a decline of 11.7% in September 2026. This continued the downward trend in the sector for the seventh month in a row, meaning that fertilizer production had been falling for seven consecutive months.
Dark Web Leak Exposes Sensitive Data of 3,897 SBI Customers
- The State Bank of India (SBI) informed the stock exchanges on Wednesday about an incident involving the leakage of some data. The bank made this announcement five days after receiving information from its Threat Intelligence Service Provider, the Defence Cyber Agency, and CERT-In about the possible exposure of customer information on the Dark Web.
- According to SBI, it initially examined around 3,75,000 records available on the Dark Web and found that 3,897 customer records contained Personally Identifiable Information (PII), which means information that can be used to identify a person. The bank informed the stock exchanges about the incident as required under the rules of the Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI). SBI also said that it quickly started its procedures to respond to the cyber incident and prevent the data leak from spreading further.
- The information that was exposed included customers’ registered mobile numbers, dates of birth, names, gender, email addresses, home addresses, branch identification details, Customer Information File (CIF) numbers, lead IDs, and other information connected with loan and lead records. The exposed data also included details about related files.
- SBI said that a detailed investigation was needed to check whether the exposed data was genuine and complete. The investigation would also try to find out how the data was exposed, how much information had been affected, and what risks the incident could create for customers and the bank.
- SBI also hired an independent cybersecurity agency approved by CERT-In to carry out a complete examination of the incident. The agency was asked to investigate the type of data breach and find out how much information had been affected.
- SBI stressed that the incident would not have any major effect on the bank’s financial performance or its ability to continue its business. It said that the bank’s main business activities were continuing normally and that there had been no disruption to its services.
- The bank further said that a detailed examination of the incident was still going on. It was also taking suitable steps to correct the problems and prevent similar incidents from happening in the future, wherever necessary.
- Meanwhile, the Internet Freedom Foundation (IFF), in a statement issued on Wednesday, said that SBI had not discovered the data breach by itself. According to the Foundation, the bank came to know about the incident through outside agencies only after the data had already been published on the Dark Web.
- The Foundation said that, on the same day, an account on X that monitors cyber threats drew attention to a claim made by a group calling itself “Siriusim”. The group claimed that it had released 3.75 lakh rows of SBI data and 2,722 PDF documents. These documents reportedly included loan applications and account-opening forms.
- The Internet Freedom Foundation pointed out that SBI’s statement did not mention these PDF documents. It also did not explain what information was contained in the remaining records apart from the 3,897 customer records that the bank had identified as containing Personally Identifiable Information.
- The Foundation raised concerns about whether SBI had informed the customers whose information had been exposed. At the time of its statement, SBI had not said that it had informed any of the affected customers. The bank’s announcement did not provide any information about whether these customers had been notified.
- The Foundation also pointed out that five days had passed between the first warning about the data exposure and SBI’s announcement to the stock exchanges. The bank’s announcement assured investors that the incident would not have any major effect on its operations. However, it did not explain what the bank was doing for the 3,897 affected customers whose phone numbers, dates of birth, and home addresses were reportedly now available to fraudsters.
- The Internet Freedom Foundation called on SBI to contact every affected customer directly and inform them about the incident without any further delay.
Rubio Meets Chandrasekaran and Adani, Visits Reliance’s Jamnagar Refinery
- U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met Gautam Adani, the chairman of the Adani Group, and N. Chandrasekaran, the chairman of Tata Sons, in Mumbai on Wednesday. After these meetings, he left for Jamnagar in Gujarat to visit Reliance Industries’ oil-refining complex, where crude oil is processed to make different petroleum products.
- Rubio arrived in Mumbai on Tuesday afternoon. According to sources, he first met Gautam Adani and then met N. Chandrasekaran.
- Neither side shared any details about these meetings.
- The visit comes at a time when India and the United States are trying to build stronger business and strategic relations. Both countries see energy security, manufacturing and technology as important areas where they can work together.
- Rubio’s visit to Jamnagar has made energy and investment in industries major parts of his India trip. Reliance Industries’ oil-refining complex has become an important point of focus for possible cooperation between Washington and New Delhi on the supply of oil across the world.
- The refinery can process many different types of crude oil. This makes it important for both countries from a strategic point of view. The United States is looking for ways to expand the market for Venezuelan oil, while India wants to increase its energy supply options by getting energy from different sources.
- Rubio was accompanied by his wife, Jeanette Dousdebes Rubio, during his visit. According to people familiar with the visit, he toured the world’s largest oil-refining complex at a single location, the Vantara wildlife rescue and conservation centre, and Reliance’s new clean-energy manufacturing centre, which is still being developed.
- Rubio spent a few hours in Jamnagar before leaving for the United States.
- Almost the entire Ambani family welcomed the U.S. delegation. The family was led by Mukesh Ambani, the billionaire chairman of Reliance Industries. Those present included his wife, Nita Ambani; his daughter, Isha Ambani, and her husband, Anand Piramal; and his younger son, Anant Ambani, and his wife, Radhika Merchant. Reliance Industries Executive Director P.M.S. Prasad and U.S. Ambassador to India Sergio Gor were also present.
- Gor said that India’s imports of liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) from the United States had increased sharply. LPG is commonly used as a cooking fuel in India. In a post on X, he said that over the past year, the share of U.S. LPG in India’s total LPG imports had increased from less than 10 per cent to 67 per cent. As a result, the United States had become India’s largest supplier of LPG.
- Gor also pointed out that Reliance plans to invest in a new oil refinery in Texas, in the United States. He said this investment could help increase energy production in the U.S. and create more jobs for people there.
