One person killed, 14 rescued in Bengaluru building collapse; schools to stay closed
- In a tragic incident in Babusapalya near Hennur, Bengaluru, an under-construction building collapsed during heavy rainfall, resulting in the death of one worker and injuries to several others.
- Preliminary investigations suggest that the collapse was due to inadequate construction quality, which was exacerbated by the intense rainfall weakening the structure.
- Emergency responders, including police and Fire and Emergency Services, managed to rescue 14 individuals trapped under the debris of the six-storey building located in Anjanadri Layout.
- Three of the rescued individuals are currently receiving treatment in the intensive care unit, while efforts to find five missing workers are still ongoing.
- The deceased has been identified as Armaan, a 26-year-old laborer from Bihar, who had sought shelter inside the building along with his coworkers due to the rain.
- Surveillance footage from a nearby location captured the sudden collapse of the structure, which appeared to fall like a deck of cards.
- According to an eyewitness, seven workers were laying tiles on the ground floor while others were on the first floor when water flooded the basement, destabilizing the soil and leading to the building’s collapse.
- Due to continuous rain and an orange alert from the India Meteorological Department, Bengaluru Urban District officials declared a holiday for all anganwadi centers and schools on Wednesday.
High Court rules that Muslim men are allowed to register multiple marriages
- The Bombay High Court ruled that a Muslim man can register more than one marriage under the Maharashtra Regulation of Marriage Bureaus and Registration of Marriages Act, 1998.
- A Division Bench of Justice B.P. Colabawalla and Justice Somasekhar Sundaresan highlighted that Muslim law permits multiple marriages.
- The case involved a man who, in February 2023, sought to register his marriage to an Algerian woman at the Thane Municipal Corporation, but his application was rejected.
- This was the man’s third marriage, and the authorities refused registration, citing the unavailability of required documents.
- Officials also argued that the Act defines marriage as involving only a single union, not multiple marriages.
- The court deemed this understanding of the Act to be completely misguided.
- The court directed the authorities to hold a hearing, issue a reasoned decision within 10 days, and, if registration is denied, to refer the matter to the Registrar General for review.
A new genus of jumping spiders, called ‘Tenkana,’ has been identified by three scientists in South India
- Researchers have identified a new genus of jumping spiders called “Tenkana,” found in southern India. This genus includes two previously recognized species along with a newly described species, Tenkana jayamangali, from Karnataka.
- The name “Tenkana” originates from the Kannada word meaning “south,” signifying the spiders’ distribution across southern India and northern Sri Lanka.
- Tenkana belongs to the Plexippina subtribe of jumping spiders and is distinct from related groups like Hyllus and Telamonia.
- The research team, which included scientists from India and Canada, published their findings in the journal Zookeys, using both genetic studies and physical examinations.
- Unlike other related species that inhabit forests, Tenkana spiders prefer drier areas and ground habitats.
- These spiders have been found in Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karnataka, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh.
- The new genus was established by scientists Kiran Marathe and Wayne Maddison from the University of British Columbia, Canada, and John Caleb T.D. from Saveetha Institute in Chennai.
- A genetic study led by Krushnamegh Kunte from the National Centre for Biological Sciences in Bengaluru has resulted in the reclassification of two species, Tenkana manu, native to South India and Sri Lanka, and Tenkana arkavathi, found in Karnataka. Both were previously grouped under the genus Colopsus but have now been reassigned to the genus Tenkana.
- Additionally, a new species has been identified and named Tenkana jayamangali, in honor of the Jayamangali River located in Karnataka.
