Elections and heat exposure

• After the first phase of General election 2024, the Election Commission of India estimates that the heat waves are stopping Voters to coming out from their houses to cast their votes.
• A task force has been constituted to assess the local heat and humidity for five days before the commencement of each phase of polling.
• The members of this task force include representatives of India Meteorological Department, the Ministry of family and health welfare, and the National disaster management Authority. These members work closely with the state electoral apparatuses to make sure the booth has adequate facilities for the Voters to deal with any harsh heat waves situation.
• Along with the heat waves,humidity is also a major concern. People of all ages are at major risk of humidity if it rises beyond the 30°C temperature. A few minutes outside can be dangerous to anyone.
• Some locations are more vulnerable to heat waves than others such as semi planned and unplanned areas, poor ventilation,crowding, lack of shade resting spots can increase the risk of heat waves.
• Encouraging more people to cast their votes is a similar situation to encourage children to go to the school, so the election commission decided to incentivize Voters such as mid day meal incentivize children.
• The task force must ensure that the some arrangements are executed to every booth such as shaded waiting areas with sitting arrangements, air flow, oral rehydration options, sanitary facilities,fruits, wheelchairs, updated first aid kits, accessible architectures, medical services, and increase awareness of Voters towards heat management protocols.
