- Tamil Nadu made history on Thursday by recording its highest-ever voter turnout of 85.15% in an Assembly election.
- As per early data, more than 4.85 crore people voted from 7 a.m. in all 234 Assembly constituencies to choose members of the 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly.
- Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar said this was the highest voting percentage ever in the State and added that the Election Commission of India salutes every voter.
- Officials explained that the figures are temporary (provisional) and do not include service voters and postal ballots, so the final percentage may go even higher.
- The State saw a four-way contest between:
- Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led alliance (ruling)
- All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK)-led alliance (opposition)
- Actor C. Joseph Vijay’s TVK party (new entry)
- Naam Tamilar Katchi led by Seeman
- Some critics said that the special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists was the main reason for such high voting.
- The turnout could have been even higher, but heavy traffic jams on the Grand Southern Trunk Road in Chennai delayed many people on Wednesday night.
- During the day, the voters’ mood was clearly visible through their clothes, social media posts, and kolams (rangoli designs), and political discussions were happening in public places.
- Voting increased step by step during the day:
- 69% within first 2 hours (by 9 a.m.)
- 56% by 11 a.m.
- 81% by 1 p.m. despite strong heat
- 70% by 3 p.m. after lunch slowdown
- Over 80% by 5 p.m.
- 24% with one hour left
- Polling was mostly peaceful, but a few incidents were reported.
- In Vengaivayal, people boycotted voting and showed black flags to protest against caste-based violence against Scheduled Castes in 2022.
- In Chennai, clashes happened in Harbour and Thousand Lights areas between supporters of DMK and AIADMK.
- K. Stalin voted with his family in Mylapore.
Edappadi K. Palaniswami voted in Edappadi constituency.
C. Joseph Vijay and Seeman voted in Neelankarai.
93% Voter Turnout Recorded Across 152 Bengal Constituencies in First Phase
- West Bengal also recorded a very high voter turnout of 92.88% in the first phase of Assembly elections, even though some violence was reported.
- This is the highest voting percentage ever in the State, and it is happening during a four-month-long special intensive revision (SIR) of voter lists, which reduced the number of voters by about 12%.
- Among districts:
- Cooch Behar – 96.04% (highest)
- Dakshin Dinajpur – 95.44%
- Jalpaiguri – 94.65%
- Murshidabad, where many voters were removed from the list earlier, still recorded a high turnout of 93.61%.
- Chief Electoral Officer Manoj Kumar Agarwal said final numbers may increase further after complete counting.
- Before this, the highest turnout was 84.33% in 2011, when All India Trinamool Congress defeated the Left Front government which ruled for 34 years.
- The first phase covered 152 Assembly seats, and voting ended at 6 p.m.
The fate of 1,478 candidates is now sealed in EVMs. - Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee said people voted in large numbers to protect their voting rights.
She also said that people fear losing their rights if they do not vote for Trinamool Congress, and mentioned issues like NRC and delimitation Bill during a speech in Kolkata. - Prime Minister Narendra Modi praised the Election Commission for conducting elections with less violence and congratulated voters for high participation.
- Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also appreciated the Election Commission’s work.

- He said on social media, “any boat, even small ones, laying mines will be shot and destroyed.”

- At the same time, Iran has started earning money by charging tolls on ships passing through the Strait.
- Two container ships with around 40 crew members, which were captured by Iran, have been moved towards Bandar Abbas.
This came after S. forces seized an Iranian ship three days earlier, and Iran had promised to respond. - Iran has clearly said that it will keep the Strait closed to most ships, allowing only a few approved vessels, as long as the S. Navy blocks its ports.
It has also rejected U.S. demands to reopen the route and give up enriched uranium. - Iran’s deputy Speaker Hamidreza Hajibabaei confirmed that the first toll money has been deposited in the Central Bank.
- On Thursday evening, air defence systems were activated in parts of Tehran after reports of possible enemy air activity.
