Flash floods in Uttarakhand claim one life

- The Karnaprayag–Gwaldam road was broken at several points due to heavy rains. Repair work is being done on priority to reopen the road quickly.
- The Meteorological Department (IMD) issued orange and red alerts for many districts of Uttarakhand, including Chamoli, warning of more heavy rain and flash floods in the next 48 hours.

- This suspension starts on August 25. The reason is a U.S. order that ends duty-free imports and makes it compulsory to collect duty in advance along with customs data from August 29.
- Airlines carrying mail to the U.S. said they cannot handle postal parcels because there is no proper system yet for collecting duty and sharing customs data under the new rules.
- India Post has said it is working to fix the issue and will restart the services as soon as they find a solution to meet the U.S. import rules.
- According to the Global Trade Research Initiative, this decision is linked to the U.S. Executive Order 14324. The order ends duty-free imports below $800 and makes advance customs data compulsory.
- Under the new U.S. system, every parcel will face tariffs. Until the U.S. Customs finalizes its new entry process, postal shipments will remain duty-free for now.
- When the rules fully start, shipments will face two types of duties:
- Ad valorem duty, which is charged based on the item’s value, as per the effective IEEPA rate.

Trump appoints Sergio Gor as envoy to India
- Donald Trump has appointed 38-year-old Sergio Gor as the new U.S. Ambassador to India. This brings some relief at a time of tense relations, but many are worried because Gor has also been made envoy for South and Central Asia.
