Centre Reports ‘Progress’ in U.S. Trade Agreement Talks

• S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer completed a two-day visit to New Delhi after holding several discussions with Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal.
• During these meetings, both leaders reviewed the main parts of the proposed interim trade agreement and also discussed the larger India–U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA), according to the Union Commerce Ministry.
• Greer and Mr. Goyal carried out a detailed review of the key areas of the Bilateral Trade Agreement.
• The discussions covered improved market access, digital trade, stronger supply chains, reduction of non-tariff barriers, and greater cooperation in important sectors.
• The Commerce Ministry did not announce any deadline for completing either the interim trade agreement or the Bilateral Trade Agreement.
• The India–U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement was announced in February 2025 and was originally expected to be completed by September–October 2025.
• The framework for the interim trade deal was signed in February 2026.
• The Ministry said that the visit was an important step towards completing a fair and beneficial India–U.S. trade agreement and finalising the interim deal according to the joint statement issued on February 7, 2026.

Warehouse Collapse in Kolkata Claims Five Lives

• Five workers died and several others were injured after a warehouse that was being built collapsed in the Taratala area of Kolkata, West Bengal, on Wednesday.
• At least 18 workers are believed to still be trapped under the broken concrete and debris.
• The accident happened shortly after noon when the multi-storey warehouse suddenly collapsed. The warehouse was being built by a private company on a plot covering 6,689 square metres.
• People present at the site said that around 50 to 60 workers were working inside when the structure suddenly came crashing down.
• Witnesses said they could hear trapped workers crying and calling for help from underneath the debris.
• Rescue teams started drilling holes through the debris to reach the trapped workers. Oxygen and food were also being supplied to people who were still trapped underneath.
• The Indian Army joined the rescue operation and sent four teams from its Eastern Command to help.
• Later in the evening, police detained three people for questioning in connection with the accident.
• The warehouse was being built on land that had been leased by the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port Authority (SMPA) for 30 years.
• West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari visited the accident site along with members of his Cabinet. He said rescue teams had managed to establish contact with some of the workers trapped under the debris.
• He stated that five different agencies, including the Indian Army and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), were carrying out rescue operations together.
• He said, “All the agencies are working together.”
• According to Mr. Adhikari, the person who had taken the land on lease from SMPA, Sambhunath Behera, submitted a building plan in January.
• He added that engineers from the Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) found problems in the building plan during their first inspection.
• After the accident, the Chief Minister ordered that all construction work on unfinished buildings within the KMC area be stopped until a safety audit is completed by July 31.
• While speaking at the State Secretariat, the CM praised local residents and Kolkata Police personnel for helping immediately after the collapse.
• He said the death toll could have been much higher if local people and police officers had not acted quickly and rescued victims soon after the accident.
• Sanjoy Kumar Mukherjee, Public Relations Officer of SMPA, said cranes were quickly sent to the site to help with rescue work and the removal of debris.
• He also said that gas-cutting equipment, fire brigade units from the port, and an ambulance with a medical team were sent to the accident site.
• Mukherjee added that teams from the Estate Division and Port Security, along with senior officers, reached the site immediately to coordinate rescue work and maintain security.
• Later in the evening, the Chief Minister visited the State-run SSKM Hospital.
• He announced that compensation for the victims would be declared in the State Assembly on Thursday.
• All five workers who died in the accident were men.
• Adhikari said that most of the workers had been brought to the site by a labour contractor from Bihar.
