• The lack of progress in foreign secretary-level and border working group discussions on this matter has contributed to growing mistrust between New Delhi and Kathmandu, offering opportunities to anti-India elements in Nepal.
• India’s most recent success in resolving a border dispute was with Bangladesh through the 2015 Land Boundary Agreement, significantly strengthening ties between the two nations.
• Therefore, India must learn from this experience: enhance border infrastructure to counter China’s actions and address border disputes with neighboring countries before they escalate into more significant issues.
• Given India’s position as the larger nation in many of these disputes, a magnanimous approach can bring substantial benefits.
• The advantages of settled borders far outweigh the costs associated with a few sparsely populated territories.
