Analysis of a tribal housing scheme

• We all know in India, there are various tribal groups founded in different parts of the country. Around 75 groups are identified as Particularly Vulnerable Tribal Groups in India.
• As per the official data, there are 14.6 lakh households comprising these groups.
• These people normally live in the scattered areas, inaccessible places and remote areas of the country and mostly depend on Agriculture. The literacy rate is low among them and they face economic backwardness and stagnant population issues.
• To resolve these issues, the government has come up with an initiative Pradhan Mantri PVTG development mission 2023-24. Under this plan, the Pradhan Mantri Janjati Adivasi Nyaya Maha Abhiyan (PM JANMAN) was introduced in November 2023.
• The total outlay for this scheme was decided to ₹24,000 crore.
• The main objective of this scheme is to improve the socio economic conditions of these groups and provide some basic services such as safe housing, clean drinking water and Sanitation through 11 critical Interventions.
• The PM JANMAN scheme aims to provide 4.90 lakh PVTG households by 2026. These households are entitled to get ₹2.39 lakh each in three installments.
• Data mismatch in the Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) under this scheme is a major challenge including inclusivity and accessibility.
• The government of India also launched an app namely Awaas+ for registration of pvtg households under the scheme but the complete execution of this app is confusing and needs updating.
• The other problem with this app is that it has left one of the key banks of the rural area. The Government of India has established IPPB to improve the banking services especially in the remote areas but leaving out this Bank is a serious concern.
• Government needs to update the mobile app,streamline the registration process and link the IPPB to better implementation of this scheme.
