  • Households’ average monthly per capita consumer expenditure (MPCE) increased 33.5 percent in cities and 40.4 percent in the rural areas since 2011-12.
  • The government tried to paint this with the higher level of income, decreasing inequality and sharp decline in poverty level in the country since 2011-12.
  • The compound annual growth in the rural areas according to the survey implies 3.5 percent whereas 3 percent growth can be seen in urban areas.
  • Even after the implementation of free goods schemes such as Pradhan Mantri Gareeb Kalyan Anna Yojana, the average MPCE for rural areas rose to ₹2054 and ₹3544 for urban areas households.
  • The portion of monthly Expenditure on the food items has declined below 50 percent in rural households and under 40 percent in urban households.
