General Secretary of Ram Temple Trust Resigns

  • Amid the controversy over the Ram Temple donation embezzlement case, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust announced on Saturday that its General Secretary, Champat Rai, and trust member Anil Mishra had submitted their resignations.
  • Trust treasurer Govind Dev Giri said that the trust will take a decision on their resignations in its next meeting.
  • The statement came a day after the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) denied media reports claiming that Mr. Rai had resigned.
  • Rai also serves as the Vice-President of the VHP.
  • In its first public statement after the controversy started, the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust said that it is fully committed to a fair investigation into the incident.
  • The Trust said it was deeply hurt, shocked, and extremely saddened by the incidents that recently came to light at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya.
  • It also said that, as representatives of millions of Ram devotees and Ram sevaks serving Lord Ram, it is committed to carrying out a fair investigation and winning back the trust of the devotees.
  • Rai and some other trust members are facing criticism over the donation theft case, in which eight people have been arrested on charges of embezzlement, criminal conspiracy, fraud, and breach of trust.
  • The Trust clarified that the silver bricks, jewellery, and other gifts personally given by devotees to its officials are completely safe and properly recorded.
  • Regarding the alleged theft of money from the temple’s donation boxes, the Trust said that an FIR had been registered based on the interim report submitted by the Special Investigation Team (SIT).
  • The Trust added that legal action is going on, the truth will come out, and everyone found guilty will be punished.
  • Meanwhile, the political fight over the issue became stronger, with Samajwadi Party (SP) president Akhilesh Yadav promising to restore and protect Ayodhya’s long-standing glory as a place of faith and devotion.
  • Yadav said that if an SP government comes to power in Uttar Pradesh in the future, it will develop Ayodhya into a unique and model religious city where devotees can experience true spirituality.
  • Leaders of the Indian National Congress continued to demand the arrest of Mr. Rai, claiming that the government was protecting him.
  • Senior Uttar Pradesh Congress leader Anil Yadav alleged that Champat Rai was only a small part of a bigger network and claimed that the real people responsible were sitting in Delhi.
  • He further accused the entire Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) ecosystem of stealing money donated by common devotees and using it to spread hatred against weaker sections of society.
  • On June 25, the Ayodhya police registered a First Information Report (FIR) in the case based on a complaint submitted by the Trust.
  • The FIR named eight accused under Sections 305, 306, 317, 317(5), 61, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) on charges of embezzlement, criminal conspiracy, fraud, and breach of trust.
  • The eight accused are Avinash Shukla, Anukalp Mishra, Luvkush Mishra, Manish Kumar Yadav, Karunesh Pandey, Rama Shankar Mishra, Subhash Srivastava, and Rama Shankar Yadav alias Tinnu.
  • All eight accused were arrested on the same day and were sent to judicial custody for three days, until June 29.

Two BJP-Ruled States Question the Financial Burden

  • At least three States, including two BJP-ruled States, have raised concerns that the new rural employment scheme will put a much bigger financial burden on them.
  • The new scheme is called the Viksit Bharat-Guarantee for Rozgar and Aajeevika Mission (Gramin) [VB-G RAM G], and it will start from July 1.
  • Under the new scheme, most States will now have to pay 40% of the total cost. This is very different from the earlier scheme, the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
  • Under MGNREGA, the Central government paid 100% of the wages of workers, while the States only had to pay part of the material cost, which was around 10% of the total budget.
  • According to a Right to Information (RTI) reply, Bihar, Madhya Pradesh (both ruled by the BJP), and Jharkhand have clearly asked the Central government to reconsider this new funding system.
  • These States said that, after studying the new plan, their 40% share of the money given under the new scheme will not be enough to provide the promised 125 days of employment.
  • The information was given by the Union Rural Development Ministry in response to an RTI application filed by Chakradhar Buddha of the National Campaign for People’s Right to Information (NCPRI).
  • In his RTI application, Mr. Buddha asked for the records of meetings and discussions held between the Central government and the States regarding the implementation of VB-G RAM G.
  • In its RTI reply, the government shared the responses of only 13 States.
  • Among these, almost every State complained about delays in wage payments and other related payments. They also asked the Centre to clear all pending dues as early as possible.
  • Even Sikkim and Uttarakhand, which follow the special 90:10 Centre–State funding pattern for Northeastern and Himalayan States, asked the Centre to review the funding rule under the new scheme.

Iran Alleges U.S. Breached Peace Agreement as Both Sides Exchange Fire

  • Iran accused the United States on Saturday of breaking the peace agreement after the U.S. carried out strikes inside Iranian territory. Iran then responded by attacking U.S. targets in the Gulf.
  • The exchange of attacks happened after the United States claimed that Iran had attacked a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • The fresh fighting created doubts about efforts to keep the important Strait of Hormuz open while both countries continue talks for a final agreement.
  • The U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) said that the latest American strikes targeted Iranian missile and drone storage sites, along with coastal radar positions.
  • According to CENTCOM, the strikes were launched because Iran had carried out what the U.S. called “unwarranted aggression against commercial shipping,” which it said was a clear violation of the ceasefire.
  • CENTCOM also described the operation as a “powerful response” to the attack on a commercial ship that was passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
  • S. Vice-President J.D. Vance warned that “violence will be met with violence” if Iran carries out any more attacks.
  • Iran strongly condemned the U.S. strikes, calling them “brutal attacks” and “a blatant violation” of the agreement that had ended the war, which had started with S.-Israeli strikes on Iran in late February.
  • Iran’s Revolutionary Guards said they had attacked U.S. sites in the Gulf region and warned that their response would become even bigger if the attacks continued.
  • Bahrain said that several Iranian drones targeted the country early on Saturday and accused Iran of damaging the ongoing peace efforts.
  • On the same day, the British maritime security agency UKMTO reported that an unidentified projectile had damaged an oil tanker in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • Regarding the U.S. strikes, Iranian media reported an explosion at a pier in the southern city of Sirik late on Friday.
  • A military source, quoted by Iranian media, said that the explosion was caused by the impact of a projectile.
  • Later, the Mehr news agency reported that Sirik Port was operating normally despite the incident.
  • Earlier, S. President Donald Trump condemned what he called an Iranian drone attack on the commercial vessel, describing it as “a foolish violation of our ceasefire agreement.”
  • Iran has warned ships not to enter or leave the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz without its permission.
  • Despite Iran’s warning, commercial ships have continued to pass through the Strait, although some have used routes that were not approved by Tehran.
