CJP Stir: Wangchuk Begins Fast at Jantar Mantar
- Environmentalist and teacher Sonam Wangchuk started an indefinite hunger strike on Sunday afternoon at Jantar Mantar, New Delhi, where the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) has been protesting since June 20.
- The CJP is demanding that Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan resign, claiming there have been several problems and unfair practices in the examination system.
- Before starting his hunger strike, CJP founder Abhijeet Dipke said on social media platform X that he had gone with Sonam Wangchuk to Rajghat to pay tribute to Mahatma Gandhi.
- Soon after paying tribute at Rajghat, Sonam Wangchuk began his hunger strike, asking for justice for students and demanding the resignation of the Education Minister.
- Abhijeet Dipke claimed that after Wangchuk announced his hunger strike, the Delhi Police stopped the water and toilet facilities at Jantar Mantar.
- The Delhi Police rejected the claim and called it “false information and misinformation.”
- The Deputy Commissioner of Police (New Delhi) explained online that the Delhi Police is only responsible for maintaining law and order and does not provide water or sanitation facilities at the protest site.
- Explaining why he joined the protest, Sonam Wangchuk said that education has been very important to him for the last 40 years, and he could not stay silent when young people raised concerns about the country’s education system.
- Wangchuk said, “I have been forced to sit here. I am not doing this happily. I am sitting on a hunger strike in support of both issues.”
- Talking about why he joined the CJP protest while also leading a movement in Ladakh, he said, “Many people ask me, you were leading a movement in Ladakh, so why are you with CJP now? Education, which is the issue here, has been close to my heart for the last 40 years, ever since I was a student.”
- Many other people, including farmer leaders, also joined the protest on Sunday.
- At least six student activists joined Sonam Wangchuk in the hunger strike and demanded the resignation of Dharmendra Pradhan.
- Wangchuk said, “I am not alone. I have been told that some young people are also starting a hunger strike. Wherever you are, I salute you.”
- The All India Students’ Association (AISA), which had earlier supported the CJP protest, announced on Sunday that six students connected with AISA had also decided to join the hunger strike.
- In its statement, AISA said that the students started the hunger strike in full support of Sonam Wangchuk’s call. They said they would stand shoulder to shoulder in the fight for Dharmendra Pradhan’s resignation, the withdrawal of the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, and the closure of the National Testing Agency (NTA).
From seas to skies, India is becoming self-reliant: Modi
- Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in his monthly radio programme Mann Ki Baat on Sunday, praised India’s growing self-reliance in defence manufacturing. He spoke about the first successful flight of the made-in-India C-295 transport aircraft and the successful test of the indigenous Long-Range Land-Attack Cruise Missile (LRLACM).
- He also thanked the people of the country for supporting his appeal to save resources and avoid unnecessary spending during the ongoing West Asia crisis.
- Modi said that June has been a very important month for India’s aviation and defence sectors.
- Talking about the C-295 aircraft programme, he said that 40 aircraft are being built in India. This will strengthen India’s MSME sector and aerospace industry and also create many job opportunities.

- The Indian Air Force is buying 56 C-295 aircraft under a ₹21,935-crore deal. Out of these, 40 aircraft are being manufactured in India by Tata Advanced Systems Limited in partnership with Airbus at their manufacturing facility in Vadodara, Gujarat.
