Over 11,500 People Take Shelter in Relief Camps as Heavy Rains Lash Maharashtra

  • Heavy rains hit many districts of western Maharashtra and Marathwada on Sunday, causing floods, cutting off six villages in Dharashiv, and forcing thousands of people into relief camps.
  • More than 11,500 people had to move to safer places in Marathwada. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis checked the situation and said the next two days are “very critical.”
  • Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis asked District Collectors to stay alert, make sure relief work goes smoothly, and also announced ₹10,000 immediate help for families whose houses were flooded.
  • He told the Collectors to also take care of fodder for animals because this was the second heavy rain spell this month, which damaged crops, houses, and displaced thousands of people.
  • In September alone, Maharashtra received 282.9 mm rainfall. The IMD issued a red alert for Mumbai, Konkan, and Marathwada, saying heavy rain will continue till September 30.
  • The State government gave a warning asking citizens to be careful. The Emergency Operations Centre also warned that Mumbai, Thane, Palghar, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg may face urban flooding.
  • The IMD said the depression over Odisha weakened into a low-pressure area over West Vidarbha and North Maharashtra, and it is expected to get weaker within 24 hours.
  • Still, very heavy rainfall is expected in Konkan, Goa, and Madhya Maharashtra as the system weakens, continuing the severe weather in western regions.
  • Fadnavis reviewed all eight districts of Marathwada — Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Beed, Hingoli, Jalna, Latur, Nanded, Dharashiv, Parbhani, and Solapur. He spoke about rescues, relocations, and relief work done so far.

  • The Chief Minister assured that the government’s aim is to give maximum support, promising smooth delivery of compensation and urgent help for all affected families.
  • NCP (SP) leader Jayant Patil wrote a letter to Governor Acharya Devvrat, asking for a special Assembly session to talk about rain damages across Maharashtra.
  • Patil said the rains had become very intense last week and asked for strong relief measures for farmers and landless workers who are in deep trouble due to the rains.

Tilak’s Ice-Cool Finish Seals Thrilling Win for India

  • For three weeks, the 17th Asia Cup was surrounded by political tensions and India-Pakistan controversies. But the final in Dubai brought cricket back to the spotlight.
  • In a thrilling match, India chased down 147 and defeated Pakistan by five wickets, winning their ninth Asia Cup trophy.
  • Tilak Varma played a calm innings of 69 not out, guiding India’s chase after early wickets fell. Rinku Singh, playing in place of the injured Hardik Pandya, finished the match with two balls left.
  • India’s spinners — Kuldeep Yadav, Varun Chakaravarthy, and Axar Patel — broke Pakistan’s batting. They took eight wickets between them, with Kuldeep shining the most with figures of 4-0-30-4.
  • India was in trouble early at 20 for three, but Tilak and Sanju Samson added 57 runs, steadying the team with a mix of patience and attacking shots.
  • Pakistan broke this partnership when Samson edged Abrar Ahmed to backward point. Once again, pressure returned on India, and the match became tense.
  • With 64 runs needed from six overs, Tilak attacked Haris Rauf, hitting 17 runs in one over, including a big six over deep backward square, reducing the target.
  • Shivam Dube then played attacking shots to keep India ahead, while Tilak stayed calm and guided the chase smartly under pressure.
  • India needed just eight runs from the last five balls when Tilak hit a six on the leg side off Haris Rauf, almost sealing the win. Rinku Singh then finished it in style.
  • Pakistan, who were strong at 113 for one, collapsed badly, losing nine wickets for only 33 runs, which turned the game completely in India’s favor.
  • For Pakistan, only openers Sahibzada Farhan (57 from 38 balls, 5 fours, 3 sixes) and Fakhar Zaman (46 from 35 balls, 2 fours, 2 sixes) scored well before the collapse.
  • Farhan attacked Bumrah early and gave Pakistan a good start at 32 without loss in four overs. This forced Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav to bring in the spinners to slow the momentum.
  • At first, Pakistan looked in control as Farhan hit Axar Patel for boundaries and even smashed Kuldeep for a huge six into the night sky.
  • But Varun Chakaravarthy dismissed Farhan, ending his 84-run stand with Zaman. This triggered the collapse that gave India the upper hand.
  • India’s win was celebrated with fireworks lighting up the Dubai night as Suryakumar Yadav’s team lifted the Asia Cup in grand style.
