Need for a smart exit strategy for Gaza war

  • The United Nations Security Council has recently passed a resolution for immediate ceasefire in Gaza during the days of Ramdan and also this resolution demands unconditional release of all hostages with immediate effect.
  • This is the first time that the UNSC has passed a resolution to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza after the war had started following brutal attacks and killing Civilians.
  • The UNSC presented four resolutions before but these all four resolutions failed due to veto power and not a surprise that the US used veto three times.
  • This time the US let the resolution pass without objection.
  • The resolution witnessed various reactions. First came from Israel when it claimed the US for “abandoning its policy in the UN”. Israel also canceled the visit to the US that was scheduled to discuss some important issues.
  • As a reaction, the US took a complete U-turn and claimed the resolution is “non-binding” and it doesn’t stop Israel from doing whatever he is doing to Gaza.
  • There is no assurance that the ceasefire will take place after the reactions and motives came forward from Israel as well as from Hamas.
  • According to the latest data, around 32,000 people lost their lives in the war in Gaza.
  • Israel had three aims when the war started, first to flatten Gaza, second to eliminate Hamas and third to release all its hostages.
  • Israel has nearly succeeded in its first aim to bring abrupt destruction in Gaza.
  • But its second aim couldn’t be completely fulfilled as it was only able to eliminate 30 percent of Hamas fighters. And it was not able to release all of its hostages.
  • Now Israel has to be mindful and measure the economic, military and political loss due to this ongoing war.
  • Both the parties need to come together and bring a smart exit to the war.
