- Covid-19 vaccination does not increase the risk of heart attack, a study published in the journal PLOS ONE has claimed.
- It is based on a retrospective analysis of the case history of 1,578 heart attack patients who were admitted to GB Pant hospital in Delhi between August 2021 and August 2022.
- According to the study, led by Dr Mohit Gupta, of the total patients, 1006 (69%) were vaccinated while 492 subjects (31%) were unvaccinated.
- Among the vaccinated group, 1,047 (96%) had received two doses of the vaccine while 39(4%) had received only a single dose.
- The researchers found there was no clustering from heart attack post-vaccinations.
- “A total of 185 (12%) of STEMIS heart attack caused by partial or complete blockage of arteries supplying blood to the heart-occurred within 90-150 days of vaccination while 175 (11%) occurred between 150-270 days.
- Only 28 (2%) of AMI cases occurred within the first 30 days,” they claim. Dr Gupta told 1578 patients with heart cardial Infarction), the 30-day all-cause mortality occurred in 201 (13%). Out of these, 116 (58%) belonged to the vaccinated group while 85 (42%) were unvaccinated.
- But the GB Pant cardiologist said when the incidence was adjusted against pre-existing risk factors in both the groups, the odds of 30-day mortality was significantly lower in the vaccinated population.
- “Contrarily increasing age, diabetics and smokers had higher odds of 30-day mortality,” he added.
- During the 30 days to six months period, 75 patients died of whom 43.7% were vaccinated.
- Dr Gupta said the adjusted odds of mortality in vaccinated subjects were lower. “This study is the first to be conducted among.
