Private sector funding and climate transition:

• According to the World Bank’s estimation about the funding that is needed for the developing countries to tackle the global challenges of climate change, on an average $2.4 trillion in a year between now and 2030 would be required.
• Mr Ajay Banga who took over the management of World Bank and previously worked with mastercard, pledged to boost the private investments in the field of climate change.
• After the introduction of Mr Banga in the World Bank,there are some major changes held by him such as alteration in the Development Leader’s Mission by adding a reference to climate change.
• The World Bank also set up a private sector advisory body for addressing the obstacles in the way of private sector funding in emerging economies.
• Apart from that the World Bank also brought a change in its target for climate related projects by increasing 45% from the 35% of its annual financing.
• The developed Nations are now more focused on carbon emissions and the developing countries are way ahead to speak about climate change as adaptation.
• To address these two issues, the World Bank has decided to invest half of the target of 45% in carbon emissions and the other half in adaptation.
• If we talk about the recent financial years, the World Bank’s commitments regarding lending were less than $130 billion.
• Now there is only one way to achieve the target is to encourage the private sector funding and participation.
• In this way ahead to encourage private sector participation there are three major issues.
• First is the regulatory certainty, second is foreign currency risk and third is how to protect investors from other risks such as war and civil unrest, according to the World Bank.
