  • Among those who died were foreign nationals as well as Indian citizens.
  • At least 47 people were rescued from the building and taken to nearby hospitals for treatment.
  • Officials said that the establishment was running without obtaining the required fire safety clearance from the Fire Department.
  • The owner of the building, Lovkesh Bajaj, was arrested by the police.
  • A First Information Report (FIR) was registered against him under Sections 105 (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 326 (mischief by fire) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
  • According to the police, 12 of the people who died were foreign nationals, while the remaining victims were Indian citizens.
  • Delhi Police said that the fire started on the ground floor of the six-storey building and later spread to the upper floors.
  • Eyewitnesses said that several people trapped inside the building jumped from the upper floors in an attempt to save themselves.
  • Local residents tried to help by placing mattresses on the ground to reduce the impact of the fall.
  • A senior official of Delhi Fire Services (DFS) told The Hindu that the building had never received fire department clearance.
  • The building did not have any firefighting equipment or fire safety arrangements inside the premises.
  • Officials also said that the building’s design did not follow the prescribed fire safety rules.
  • There was only one entry and exit point in the building, and all floors were connected through a single staircase.
  • Sources in the Municipal Corporation of Delhi stated that the building had permission for only six rooms but was operating more than 20 rooms.
  • The same sources confirmed that the building had only one entry-exit point.
  • Lieutenant-Governor Taranjeet Singh Sandhu ordered a magisterial inquiry to find out who was responsible for the incident.
  • The meeting was attended by Delhi Home Minister Ashish Sood.
  • The Lieutenant-Governor also ordered a month-long citywide inspection drive starting Thursday to check safety standards in hotels, lodges, inns, nursing homes, coaching centres, restaurants, and other vulnerable commercial establishments.
  • According to an official statement, all rooms in hotels operating beyond their approved capacity will be shut down.
  • Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced an ex gratia payment of ₹2 lakh to the family of each deceased person from the Prime Minister’s National Relief Fund.
  • The Prime Minister also announced financial assistance of ₹50,000 for every injured person.
  • Delhi Police said that the first emergency call regarding the fire was received at 8:48 a.m.
  • Police personnel and Delhi Fire Services teams immediately reached the location and began rescue and evacuation operations.
  • According to a senior fire services official, the fire remained limited to the basement, ground floor, first floor, and second floor of the building.
  • Although the flames were controlled on these floors, heavy smoke and intense heat affected the rest of the building.
  • A total of 10 fire engines were deployed to control the fire and carry out rescue operations.
  • Preliminary investigations revealed serious violations of safety and licensing rules.
  • Investigators found that the building had been expanded for commercial use without proper authorisation.
  • According to the office of Ashish Sood, several safety and licensing irregularities were discovered.
  • The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Congress criticised the BJP government over the incident.
  • Both parties alleged that the Fire Department responded late and linked the tragedy to other recent fire incidents.
  • Local residents claimed that firefighters arrived around 45 minutes after the fire was reported and did not have enough equipment to deal with the emergency.
  • Fire Department officials rejected these claims and said they reached the location immediately after receiving the emergency call.
  • Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that all emergency response agencies were mobilised as soon as information about the incident was received.
  • She stated that rescue and relief operations began immediately after emergency services were activated.

U.S. Considers 12.5% Tariff on India Over Alleged Failure to Enforce Forced Labour Regulations

  • The United States has proposed a 12.5% tariff on imports from 54 countries, including India.
  • The U.S. claims that these countries have not properly stopped or prevented the import of goods made using forced labour.
  • India has said that it is in discussions with the U.S. government regarding the proposal.
  • At the same time, India is also working towards finalising an Interim Trade Agreement with the United States.
  • In March 2026, the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) launched an investigation under Section 301 of the U.S. Trade Act, 1974.
  • The purpose of the investigation was to examine whether U.S. trading partners were taking enough steps to stop the import of products made through forced labour.
  • The proposed tariffs are not final yet, and affected countries still have an opportunity to present their case.
  • The process includes:
  • Requests to participate in public hearings by June 22, 2026
  • Submission of written comments by July 6, 2026
  • Participation in public hearings on July 7, 2026
  • According to trade experts, Section 301 investigations are increasingly being used by the U.S. government to impose tariffs after the U.S. Supreme Court struck down reciprocal tariffs in February 2026, including the 50% tariff imposed on India by Donald Trump.
  • The USTR report stated that India’s policies and actions regarding forced-labour imports are unreasonable and create restrictions for U.S. commerce.
  • Under the proposal, India has been placed in the same tariff category as Bangladesh, China, Malaysia, Thailand, and Vietnam.
  • The proposal also includes a separate arrangement for textile and apparel products.
  • Under this arrangement, a certain quantity of imports from selected countries would be allowed into the U.S. at lower tariff rates.
  • Agneshwar Sen, Trade Policy Leader at EY India, said that the impact on India could be significant.
  • Labour-intensive sectors such as textiles, garments, carpets, leather products, and brassware may face an additional tariff burden of at least 10%.
  • This would increase the overall cost of exporting these products to the U.S.
  • Sen suggested that India should submit detailed written representations before July 6 and actively participate in the July 7 hearing to challenge the findings of the investigation.
  • The Ministry of Commerce and Industry stated that India continues to engage with the U.S. government as part of the Section 301 process.
  • India is also negotiating an Interim Agreement and a broader Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) with the United States.
  • A U.S. negotiating team is currently visiting India on a three-day mission that will conclude on June 4, 2026.
  • According to the Ministry, the visit aims to finalise the Interim Agreement and move forward with negotiations on the broader trade deal.

  • There was some confusion and resistance within the party regarding the post of Deputy Chief Minister.
  • Senior Dalit leader G. Parameshwara was sworn in as the Deputy Chief Minister.
  • The oath-taking ceremony took place at Lok Bhavan’s Glass House in Bengaluru and was attended by a large crowd.
  • Shivakumar succeeded veteran OBC leader Siddaramaiah as Chief Minister.
  • Along with the Chief Minister, 13 Cabinet Ministers also took the oath of office.
  • Shivakumar is expected to serve for slightly less than two years before the next Karnataka Assembly election.
  • Within hours of taking office, he announced several welfare schemes focused on youth and infrastructure development.
  • Calling his tenure the beginning of a “Yuva Yuga” (Era of Youth), he announced free bus passes for students across Karnataka.

  • Giving special attention to Bengaluru’s infrastructure problems, Mr. Shivakumar announced ₹2,000 crore for repairing roads damaged by rain.
  • Property owners whose buildings do not fully comply with building bylaws will receive a one-time waiver to obtain electricity and water connections.
  • The government will also continue the process of converting ‘B’ khatha properties into ‘A’ khatha properties.
  • Over the previous two days, Congress leaders held extensive discussions while facing pressure from leaders seeking Cabinet positions.
  • The final list of Ministers was released only a few hours before the swearing-in ceremony.
  • Contrary to expectations, the Cabinet largely consisted of experienced senior leaders rather than many new faces.
  • The major exception was Yathindra Siddaramaiah, son of Siddaramaiah, who entered the Cabinet for the first time.
  • Among those sworn in was T. Khader, who had earlier resigned as Speaker.
  • Apart from Mr. Khader and Mr. Yathindra, every Minister sworn in on Wednesday had previously served in Siddaramaiah’s second government.

  • The Dalit community has been represented in the Cabinet through Priyank Kharge, G. Parameshwara, and K.H. Muniyappa.
  • Since the Chief Minister belongs to the Vokkaliga community, the inclusion of six-time MLA Krishna Byre Gowda is seen as an effort to maintain social and community balance.
  • Ramalinga Reddy represents the Reddy Vokkaliga community.
  • To provide representation to the Kuruba community, to which Siddaramaiah belongs, the party inducted Byrathi Suresh along with Yathindra Siddaramaiah.
  • A second phase of Cabinet expansion is expected after the Rajya Sabha and Karnataka Legislative Council elections scheduled for June 18.
  • Prominent leaders present at the ceremony included Rahul Gandhi, Mallikarjun Kharge, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, V.D. Satheesan, and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy.
