Cyclone Devastates Three A.P. Districts, Leaving Two Dead
- At least two people lost their lives on Tuesday after Severe Cyclonic Storm Murasu hit the southern coastal areas of Andhra Pradesh. The cyclone destroyed standing crops spread across 52,459 hectares of land. It also damaged 312 houses and several electricity transmission lines.
- State Disaster Management Authority (SDMA) Managing Director Prakhar Jain confirmed the deaths. He said that 12,230 people had been moved to relief camps in the worst-hit districts of Guntur, Bapatla and Palnadu to keep them safe from the cyclone.
- Speaking to The Hindu, Mr. Jain said that both deaths took place in Bapatla district due to heavy rain and building collapses. A 25-year-old man in Chinnaganjam and a 65-year-old woman in Karamchedu died after buildings fell on them.
- Cyclone Murasu crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast near Ongole in Prakasam district between 3:30 a.m. and 8:30 a.m. It brought heavy rainfall to the dry districts of Prakasam and Palnadu and caused widespread damage in several areas.
- In Prakasam district, more than 30 trees fell on roads, while around 300 other trees were uprooted in eight villages. The cyclone also affected more than 200 mobile towers, disturbing mobile network services in several places.
- The bad weather affected transport services and left many passengers stuck at different places. More than 35 trains were cancelled, 14 trains were sent through different routes and eight trains had their timings changed. Several flights were also cancelled because of the bad weather.
- According to Mr. Jain, the first reports estimated the total loss caused by Cyclone Murasu at ₹344 crore. However, he said that the damage was not as serious as the damage caused by Cyclone Arnab, which had hit Andhra Pradesh just a week earlier.
- According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the highest continuous wind speed recorded when Cyclone Murasu crossed the coast was between 110 and 120 kmph.
- Between 12 midnight and 6 a.m. on Tuesday, Prakasam and Bapatla districts received very heavy rainfall of around 200 mm. The heavy rain caused difficulties for people and increased the risk of flooding in several areas.
- After crossing the coast, the cyclone moved towards the northwest and became weaker by noon, turning into a cyclonic storm. The IMD said that it was expected to become even weaker and turn into a deep depression by Tuesday night as it moved towards Telangana.
- The Budameru rivulet in NTR district was also expected to receive a large amount of water because of the heavy rainfall. This rivulet had caused floods in Vijayawada in 2024. To avoid a similar situation, officials started moving people living in low-lying areas to relief camps so that they would remain safe if the water level increased.
- Between 8:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. on Tuesday, Marripalem in Palnadu district received the highest rainfall of the day, measuring 263.75 mm. Ganapavaram recorded the second-highest rainfall at 246.7 mm.
- Konanki in Bapatla district received 213.25 mm of rainfall during the same period.
- Five weather stations recorded extremely heavy rainfall of more than 204.5 mm. Four of these stations were in Palnadu district, while one was in Bapatla district.
- Apart from these areas, 21 weather stations in Guntur, Prakasam and West Godavari districts recorded rainfall of more than 100 mm.
- Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said that the State government had handled both Cyclone Arnab and Cyclone Murasu effectively. Both cyclones had hit the Andhra Pradesh coast within a period of just one week, creating a difficult situation for the State.
- He said that during both cyclones, the government’s main aim was to save people’s lives and reduce damage to houses, property and other important things.
- The Chief Minister also thanked the Central Government and the governments of Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu for coming forward to help Andhra Pradesh during this difficult time.
- Union Home Minister Amit Shah spoke to Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and assured him that the Central Government would fully support the people of Andhra Pradesh in dealing with any difficult situation.
- In a message shared on X, Amit Shah said that teams of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) were already present in the affected areas. These teams were carrying out rescue and relief work and helping people affected by the cyclone. He also assured that the teams would continue to support the people during this difficult time.
U.S. Votes in Midterm Elections as Control of Congress Hangs in the Balance
- Americans voted on Tuesday in an important midterm election. The Democratic Party wanted to take control of Congress and reduce President Donald Trump’s power in Washington during the remaining years of his term.
- Opinion polls showed that President Trump might face a major defeat in the elections. Before the voting, Mr. Trump made his final appeal to the voters and said that he had made America stronger again through strict action against illegal immigration, the war with Iran, and his tariff policies.
- Opinion polls expected the Democrats to win more than half the seats in the House of Representatives. They also had a chance of taking control of the Senate. This expected victory was mainly due to the growing anger among voters against President Trump, whose popularity had fallen because many people were unhappy with his work.
- A total of 435 seats in the House of Representatives and 35 out of the 100 seats in the Senate were being contested in these elections. Apart from this, elections for the posts of Governor were also being held in 36 states.
- The Democrats needed to win only three more seats in the House of Representatives and gain a total of four additional seats in the Senate to take control of both chambers from the Republicans.
- If the Republicans lost control of the House of Representatives, the Democrats would get the power to stop or delay President Trump’s plans and decisions. They would also be able to start major investigations into the work, decisions, and actions of his government.
- Losing control of the Senate would also create problems for President Trump. The Senate plays an important role in approving the President’s appointments. Therefore, a defeat in the Senate could make it difficult for him to appoint judges to the Supreme Court and choose senior government officials.
- Before the voting began on Tuesday, President Trump spoke on the television programme Fox & Friends and asked people to support him and his party. He said, “We have to keep America great. We’re great now. We were terrible two years ago.” Through this statement, he tried to show that America had become stronger under his leadership.
- President Trump returned to office last year after promising to reduce the prices of goods and make life easier for ordinary Americans. However, people were still facing rising prices because of inflation, higher costs due to tariffs, and increasing fuel prices caused by the conflict in West Asia. These problems had made it difficult for many American families to manage their daily expenses.
- President Trump’s approval rating had remained close to the low 30% range. This showed that only a small percentage of Americans were happy with his work as President.
- Republicans said that President Trump’s tax cuts and strict policies against illegal immigration would help ordinary Americans. They also tried to show Democratic candidates as extreme left-wing leaders who wanted to bring major and unwanted changes to the country.
- The Republicans had a majority in the Senate with 53 seats, while the Democrats held 47 seats. However, the election fight was spreading to several states that usually supported the Republicans. These states included Kansas, Texas, Iowa, Ohio, and Alaska. The Democrats were also trying to win seats in these traditionally Republican states.
- At the same time, the Democrats also had to protect their own seats in states where the election results were expected to be very close. One of these states was Michigan, where both parties were facing a tough election contest.
- In Michigan, a serious disagreement within the Democratic Party created problems for its election campaign. Congresswoman Haley Stevens decided to support Republican candidate Mike Rogers instead of supporting the official Democratic candidate, Abdul El-Sayed. This decision showed the differences within the Democratic Party and created another challenge for the Democrats as they tried to win more seats in Congress.
Welfare Benefits to Be Linked to Voter IDs, Not Aadhaar: Minister
- Voter ID cards, along with biometric verification (checking a person’s identity through fingerprints or other physical details), will be used to identify people receiving government benefits and to make payments under welfare schemes run by the Union Ministry of Panchayati Raj. Union Minister for Panchayati Raj and JD(U) leader Rajiv Ranjan Singh repeated this on Tuesday.
- The Minister made this statement while talking to the media during an event at the Sikkim Cooperative Milk Producers’ Union Ltd. in Gangtok.
- He had made the same statement earlier on Friday at a workshop organised by his Ministry in Delhi. The workshop was held under the People’s Plan Campaign (PPC) 2026-27.
- His statement came at a time when Opposition parties are running a campaign over alleged “vote theft”. They have claimed that many voters’ names have been wrongly removed from the electoral lists.
- Singh said that Aadhaar cards are currently being used as the main proof of identity for making payments to people receiving government benefits. However, in the proposed system, Aadhaar will no longer be treated as the main document for identifying beneficiaries.
- While speaking in Delhi, the Minister had also raised concerns about how easily people could get an Aadhaar card. He said that Aadhaar cards could be made at almost every street corner. According to him, this easy availability could allow people to use fake or wrongly obtained Aadhaar cards to receive government benefits even when they are not eligible.
- He also said that anyone could get an Aadhaar card made in just five minutes. Through this statement, he pointed out the chances of fraud in the Aadhaar-based identification system.
- Under the proposed new system, people receiving government benefits will have to provide their EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Card) or voter ID card numbers along with biometric verification. This will be required to prove their identity and receive benefits under government welfare schemes.
- The Minister said that biometric verification along with the EPIC number would be used as the main proof of a beneficiary’s identity. Government payments would be made on the basis of these details.
- While speaking in Gangtok, Mr. Singh said that this change would help make sure that government welfare schemes reach only those people who are actually eligible for them. It would also help the government find and remove people who have wrongly entered the list of beneficiaries to receive benefits.
- He further said that the new system would make the process of checking beneficiaries stronger and help bring more transparency to the distribution of government benefits. This would make it easier to ensure that welfare benefits reach the right people.
- Meanwhile, the Sixteenth Finance Commission has recommended a total grant of ₹4,35,236 crore for 2.55 lakh panchayats and traditional local bodies for the five-year period from 2026 to 2031.
