The Centre has approved defence proposals amounting to ₹1.44 lakh crore
The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) has approved the procurement of seven stealth frigates, future-ready combat vehicles to replace main battle tanks, air defence fire control radars, Dornier aircraft, and patrol vessels.
- The Defence Acquisition Council (DAC), led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, approved Acceptance of Necessity (AoN) for 10 capital acquisition proposals worth ₹1,44,716 crore on Tuesday.
- The approved proposals include the procurement of seven stealth frigates under Project-17B, future-ready combat vehicles (FRCV) for the Army, air defence fire control radars (FCR), Dornier-228 aircraft, and next-generation fast and offshore patrol vessels.
- 99% of the total cost for these acquisitions will be sourced indigenously under the Buy (Indian) and Buy (Indian-Indigenously Designed, Developed, and Manufactured) categories.
- The FRCV is envisioned as a futuristic Main Battle Tank with advanced mobility, all-terrain capability, multi-layered protection, precise firepower, and real-time situational awareness.
- Previous attempts at the FRCV project were unsuccessful and eventually scrapped; this current project aims to replace the Army’s T-72 and T-90 main battle tanks.
- The DAC has given AoN for the construction of seven advanced stealth frigates under Project-17B, with Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE) and Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Ltd. (MDL) competing for the contract.
- The AoN also encompasses the acquisition of air defense fire control radars (FCR), which are designed to detect and track aerial targets and provide solutions for targeting.
- The DAC approved the proposal for Forward Repair Team (Tracked), which offers cross-country mobility for in-situ repairs during mechanized operations, developed by Armored Vehicles Nigam Limited.
- Three AoNs were given to enhance the Indian Coast Guard’s capabilities, including the procurement of Dornier-228 aircraft and next-generation fast patrol vessels with high operational efficiency in rough weather.
- The approved proposals for the Coast Guard also include next-generation offshore patrol vessels equipped with advanced technology and capabilities for long-range operations.
- The Ministry of Defence highlighted that these procurements aim to significantly boost India’s indigenous defense manufacturing and operational capabilities.
