6 arrested for U.P. stampede; godman not named in FIR
The police have announced a reward of ₹1 lakh for any information leading to the apprehension of Devprakash Madhukar, the primary suspect in the case. Investigation teams have been formed to search for members of the organizing committee responsible for all aspects of the religious gathering in Hathras. Police also stated that Bhole Baba will be questioned if necessary during the investigation.
- On Thursday, the Uttar Pradesh Police apprehended six individuals, including two women, in relation to the stampede at a religious gathering in Hathras, which tragically claimed the lives of 121 people.
- The arrested individuals were part of the committee that organized the satsang led by preacher Narayan Sakar Hari, also known as Bhole Baba, who was not named in the first information report (FIR). The police also announced a ₹1 lakh reward for information on Devprakash Madhukar, the main accused in the incident. According to the police, Madhukar, who follows Bhole Baba, was tasked with collecting funds for his events.
- Commenting on the arrests, Inspector-General of Police Shalabh Mathur stated that police teams have been assembled to locate individuals who were part of the organizing committee for the satsang.
- Mathur stated, “Our teams have detained six individuals identified as Rahbari Singh Yadav, Bhupendar Singh Yadav, Megh Singh, Manju Yadav, Mukesh Kumar, and Manju Devi. They were all volunteers who left the site after the stampede.”
- The official stated that those arrested were responsible for all aspects of the religious event, including crowd management and fund collection. “Their role was to handle everything related to the satsang. The arrested individuals told us that Bhole Baba’s followers feel blessed to collect his charan raj [soil under his feet]. On the day of the stampede, volunteers were unable to control the crowd as people pushed forward to collect the soil,” Mr. Mathur said.
- He also mentioned that a non-bailable warrant will be issued against Mr. Madhukar. Mathur stated that all 121 bodies have been identified and returned to their families after completing the necessary formalities and post-mortem examinations.
- When asked if the preacher, known as Suraj Pal and reportedly a former policeman, would be questioned in the case, the official stated that interrogation will occur if deemed necessary during the investigation.
- “We discovered a criminal case filed against the preacher in Agra, where he was acquitted. We are currently investigating whether there are any prior criminal cases involving him and his followers across various states and cities. As new names and information emerge, we will continue to interrogate and arrest individuals,” stated Mr. Mathur.
