Democrats Take Control of Congress, Delivering a Setback to Trump

  • The Democratic Party won control of both houses of the U.S. Congress in Tuesday’s midterm elections. The party won both the Senate and the House of Representatives in a major defeat for President Donald Trump. The result showed that people across the country were unhappy with the President and his government. This victory will make it difficult for Trump to carry out his plans during the last two years of his term.
  • By Wednesday, most of the election results had been announced. Democrats had won at least 237 seats in the 435-member House of Representatives. They also increased their seats in the 100-member Senate to at least 54.
  • Democrats defeated Republican candidates in several seats that Republicans had controlled for many years. They made big gains in South Carolina, North Carolina, Iowa, Kansas, Ohio, Texas and Maine. People were already unhappy with President Trump, and the rising cost of daily needs made their anger even stronger. The increasing cost of living became one of the reasons behind the Democrats’ strong victory.
  • In Texas, Democrat James Talarico, who had earlier worked as a schoolteacher, won the Senate election by defeating the state’s Attorney-General, Ken Paxton. Paxton was a close supporter of President Trump. During his election campaign, Talarico used the message of “politics of love”. With this victory, he became the first Democrat to win a statewide election in Texas since 1994.
  • Another major victory for Democrats came when Gina Hinojosa defeated Republican Governor Greg Abbott in Texas. Her victory ended several decades of Republican rule in the state.
  • The Democrats’ victory became even more special when Abdul El-Sayed defeated former Republican lawmaker Mike Rogers in Michigan. With this victory, El-Sayed became the first Muslim to be elected to the U.S. Senate, the upper house of the U.S. Congress.
  • President Trump initially gave a calm response to the election results, even though he had questioned election results in the past. While speaking to The New York Times, he said that he was “absolutely willing” to accept the results of the election.
  • However, Trump later gave a different response during an interview with Fox News. He said, “I do not view it as a hit on me.” He also warned Democrats not to try to remove him from the post of President through impeachment. He said that such an attempt would “destroy” the Democratic Party.
  • The Democrats’ big victory will give them the power to stop bills and laws supported by President Trump. They will also be able to start major investigations into the working of his government. Apart from this, they can stop some of his choices for important positions in the courts and senior government offices.
  • After winning the election in Michigan, Abdul El-Sayed celebrated his historic victory with his supporters at his election headquarters. During his speech, he said, “Michigan, we did it!”
  • El-Sayed’s victory came even after an unexpected development just before the election. Congresswoman Haley Stevens, who had lost the Democratic Party’s primary election to El-Sayed, supported the Republican candidate at the last moment. Despite this unexpected move, El-Sayed managed to win the election.
  • In Kansas, Methodist minister Adam Hamilton became the first Democrat to win a Senate seat from the state since 1932. Kansas has generally been a strong state for the Republican Party.
  • Iowa also saw an important change in its election results. The state had not elected a Democratic Senator since 2008. However, Democrats managed to break this long gap in the latest election.
  • In Maine, former logger Troy Jackson defeated long-time Republican Senator Susan Collins. With this victory, Democrats won their seventh Senate seat from the Republican Party.
  • Democrats also managed to save some important Senate seats that they already held. These included the seat of Jon Ossoff in Georgia and an open Senate seat in New Hampshire, where they successfully kept Republican candidates from winning.
  • Democrats also performed well in the elections for the House of Representatives. They won more seats in Pennsylvania, Kentucky, Arizona, North Carolina, Wisconsin and New Jersey. Some of these areas were places where Donald Trump had won by a large margin in the 2024 presidential election.
  • The election results also brought several historic achievements in American politics. In an important election that was closely watched by people across the country, Democrat J.D. Ford defeated Republican Congresswoman Victoria Spartz in Indiana. He won a district where President Trump had received 17 percentage points more votes than his opponent just two years earlier.
  • Democrats also won the Governor’s election in Georgia. Former Atlanta Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms became the new Governor of the state. With this victory, she became the first Black woman in the history of the United States to become a Governor.
  • The Republican Party also had some reasons to celebrate, especially in Florida. Byron Donalds, who had the support of President Trump, became the first Black Governor of Florida.
  • In Florida, Republican Ashley Moody also managed to keep her Senate seat. However, she had to face much stronger competition from Democratic candidates than expected before winning the election.
  • The Democrats’ control over both houses of Congress will allow them to investigate several important issues related to the Trump government. These investigations may include the Iran war, the government’s actions on immigration and complaints of corruption against people in the administration.
  • Democrats will also be able to stop President Trump’s plans and block his choices for important government positions. This means that Trump may face serious difficulties in passing laws and carrying out his policies during the remaining two years of his term.
  • Democratic Representative Robert Garcia is now expected to become the head of the powerful House Oversight Committee. This committee looks into the working of the government and investigates possible wrongdoings by government officials. After the election results, Garcia warned the Republicans through a social media post by writing, “LAWYER UP.”
  • House Democratic leader Hakeem Jeffries also spoke about the election victory. He said that President Trump’s MAGA movement was “on the run from sea to shining sea”. Through this statement, he meant that Trump’s political movement had suffered a major defeat across the country.
  • Hakeem Jeffries may also create history when the new Congress starts its work in January. He could become the first Black Speaker of the House of Representatives in the history of the United States.
  • Even after saying that he was ready to accept the election results, President Trump continued to defend himself on social media. He claimed that the Republican Party would have won the election by a huge margin, saying it would have won “IN A LANDSLIDE” if he himself had been a candidate.

Agniveers May Get Extension Option and a Chance to Join the Army as Regular Soldiers

  • The Union Cabinet has approved an extra two years of service for a section of Agniveers. This decision will give all Agniveers recruited under the Agnipath scheme a chance to join the armed forces as regular soldiers. However, they must be willing to continue serving and must pass the required selection process.
  • This decision brings a major change to the original Agnipath scheme. Under the earlier rules, only 25% of Agniveers from each batch could be selected to continue in the armed forces as regular soldiers after completing four years of service. The remaining 75% had to leave the armed forces after completing their four-year service period.
  • Under the new arrangement, 25% of Agniveers will continue to get regular jobs in the armed forces, as provided under the earlier rules. The remaining 75% will now get an opportunity to serve for another two years. After completing these additional two years, they will also be considered for selection as regular soldiers in the armed forces.
  • Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani shared this information with mediapersons on Wednesday. He explained that the additional two-year service period would give Agniveers another chance to become regular soldiers in the armed forces.
  • The Agniveers selected for the second period of service will receive several additional benefits. These include a higher salary, an increased Seva Nidhi package and benefits related to seniority, which will recognise their additional years of service.
  • The government has taken this decision after carefully checking the work and performance of Agniveers. Their performance was studied on the basis of the needs of the armed forces and how well they were able to carry out their duties. According to the government, Agniveers had shown excellent performance in different areas, such as work skills, willingness to serve, physical fitness and the ability to use modern technology.
  • The additional two-year service period was approved on the recommendations of all three services of the armed forces, namely the Army, Navy and Air Force. The decision was taken after a detailed study of their performance and feedback received from different levels.
  • According to the Defence Ministry, the main aim of this decision is to balance the career expectations of Agniveers with the needs of the armed forces. It will also help the armed forces maintain their working efficiency and ensure that they have trained and capable personnel to carry out their duties.
  • The government stated that a detailed review of the Agnipath scheme was carried out after four years of its implementation. This review highlighted several achievements of the scheme. One important achievement was that recruitment had reached a wider number of districts and different geographical areas across the country, giving young people from more regions an opportunity to join the armed forces.
  • The scheme has also helped make the recruitment process more uniform, clear and transparent. It has encouraged Agniveers to maintain a high level of physical fitness, good morale, strong motivation, a competitive spirit and discipline while serving in the armed forces.
  • During their service, Agniveers have also been able to improve their work skills, learn to use modern technology and increase their educational qualifications. The scheme has helped personnel become more comfortable with new technology and better prepared to meet the changing needs of the armed forces.
  • Another important achievement of the Agnipath scheme is that it has opened the doors of various branches of the defence forces to women. This has created more opportunities for women to join different parts of the armed forces and serve the country.
  • After studying the performance of the scheme and considering the feedback received, the government has decided to continue with the Agnipath scheme. However, some important changes will now be introduced. These include an additional two-year service period for Agniveers and a further opportunity for them to be considered for regular jobs in the armed forces after completing this extended period.

SC Says Declining Fertility Rate Makes Two-Child Policy Outdated

  • The Supreme Court on Wednesday said that laws punishing people for having more than two children are no longer useful because the birth rate in India has been falling over the years.
  • A Bench headed by Justice P.S. Narasimha strongly stated that laws that punish people for having more than two children have lost their importance. The court explained that these laws were made because of the fear that India’s population would grow too much. However, changes in the country’s population over the past few decades have reduced this concern.
  • The court said that its 2003 decision in the case of Javed v. State of Haryana, in which it had supported laws against having more than two children, should be looked at again by a larger Bench of the Supreme Court.
  • India’s Total Fertility Rate (TFR) has fallen from 3.02 to 1.9. The replacement rate is 2.1. This means that a generation needs to have an average of 2.1 children per woman so that it can replace itself with the next generation and maintain the population level over time.
  • The court said that India’s total population has not started decreasing yet. However, as the birth rate has fallen below the replacement level, the country will soon face major changes in its population. There will be more elderly people and a smaller number of people in the working-age group.
  • Justice P.S. Narasimha observed that laws made to control the growth of the population have now lost their importance because the situation in India has changed.
  • The Supreme Court’s 2003 decision had referred to China’s population situation in 2000. At that time, the court had also taken inspiration from the steps taken by China to control its population.
  • The court said that the old belief that a large population always creates problems for the development of a country is no longer correct. Instead of only worrying about the problems caused by a large population, society and courts should now focus on encouraging healthy population growth.
  • The judgment was given by a Bench that also included Justice Alok Aradhe.
  • The court also pointed out that the number of elderly people in India has been increasing. The share of people aged 60 years and above increased from around 8.3% in 2014 to 9.7% in 2024.
  • According to government estimates, the share of people aged 60 years and above is expected to reach nearly 15% by 2036.
  • The court explained that because fewer children are being born in India, the number of young people will become smaller in the coming years. At the same time, the number of elderly people will increase, leading to an ageing population.
  • The court warned that ignoring these changes in the population could create serious problems in the future. It also said that not changing laws according to the needs of changing times can cause injustice and may amount to the misuse of power.
  • The judgment was given on a petition filed by Mangala Bhimrao Ingle. Her election as the sarpanch of the Kakoda Gram Panchayat in Maharashtra had been cancelled because she had more than two children.
  • Justice P.S. Narasimha said that laws which connect a woman’s right to contest elections with the number of children she has go against Article 21 of the Indian Constitution, which guarantees the Right to Life.
  • The court explained that such laws stop an entire group of people from taking part in political activities and getting elected to public positions. The number of children a person has does not have a proper connection with their ability to perform the duties of a public office.
  • Justice Narasimha further said that these laws put women in an unfair situation by forcing them to choose between having children and taking part in democratic activities, such as contesting elections and holding an elected position.
  • The court observed that such restrictions interfere with a woman’s reproductive freedom, which is protected under Article 21 of the Constitution. Reproductive freedom means that a woman has the right to make her own decisions about having children.
  • The Supreme Court called for its 2003 decision in Javed v. State of Haryana to be reconsidered by a larger Bench without delay.
  • Meanwhile, the court allowed Mangala Bhimrao Ingle to continue working as the elected sarpanch of the Kakoda Gram Panchayat.
  • The Supreme Court also stopped any legal action against her for the time being. This means that she can continue in her elected position while the larger Bench considers the matter again.
