Mamdani Becomes New York’s First Muslim and South Asian Mayor-Elect

  • Zohran Mamdani made history on Tuesday by becoming New York City’s first Muslim and South Asian-origin Mayor-elect. He is also the youngest person to win the post since 1917, after running a campaign that started from the ground level.
  • His win focused on making life affordable and challenged the city’s usual political system controlled by rich donors. It marked a big change in how the city wants to be led and what it wants from its leaders.
  • Speaking to a happy crowd in Brooklyn, 34-year-old Mamdani said New York had moved from the old ways into a new chapter, celebrating a political change.
  • He quoted Jawaharlal Nehru’s “Tryst with Destiny,” saying that moments when a country moves from old to new with a fresh spirit are rare in history.
  • Mamdani defeated Republican Curtis Sliwa and former Governor Andrew Cuomo, who had the support of billionaires trying to stop Mamdani’s rise but failed despite spending heavily.
  • In his victory speech, Mamdani said New York had voted for affordable living, a new kind of politics, and a government that truly works for its people.
  • He said he hoped that future generations would only regret that such a day of change came so late, showing that the city’s politics had deeply transformed.
  • Over two million people voted — the highest number in a mayoral election in 50 years, according to the New York Board of Elections.
  • Mamdani got 50.4% of the votes, Cuomo got 41.6%, and Sliwa received 7.1%, giving Mamdani a clear and historic victory.
  • Speaking to President Donald Trump’s warning of cutting federal funds, Mamdani said New York could show America how to defeat him politically.
  • He told Trump, “Turn the volume up,” showing boldness and confidence, while the crowd cheered loudly at his strong words.
  • Mamdani was joined by his wife Rama Duwaji, his mother and filmmaker Mira Nair, and father Mahmood Mamdani, as they left the stage to the song “Dhoom Machale” during the celebration.
  • His journey from being a little-known State Assemblyman to becoming the leading candidate for New York Mayor is an example of modern grassroots organizing and people’s power in politics.
  • A year earlier, after Trump’s comeback, Mamdani had personally spoken to voters in Astoria, Queens, asking them about their political choices and beliefs.
  • He built a diverse group of supporters from many ethnic and religious backgrounds who were often ignored by mainstream politicians, spreading his message of fairness and unity across the city.
  • Mamdani said New York would always be a city built, powered, and now led by immigrants, proudly highlighting his own immigrant roots.
  • He said his campaign broke all old ideas about who could win, calling himself young, Muslim, a democratic socialist, and proud of his values and beliefs.
