  • On Tuesday, the search for the bodies of missing people in the Chooralmala-Mundakkai landslides continued for the eighth day. Although no new bodies were found, search teams did recover seven body parts from various locations. The official death toll was updated to 224. • An official press statement released on Tuesday reported that 152 people are missing. Additionally, 22 unidentified body parts were buried on the same day.
  • A comprehensive search was carried out from Punchirimattam, where the landslide began, extending down to Mundakkai and Chooralmala. The search was then broadened to include Soochipara waterfalls in Meppadi panchayat, as well as Pothukal and Nilambur in Malappuram district.
  • The Indian Air Force helicopters transported search teams to the remote Soochipara waterfalls and the forested Sunrise Valley, including members from the Kerala Police’s Special Operations Group (SOG), Army personnel, and Forest Department officials.
  • The search efforts, led by Army high-altitude experts and SOG personnel equipped with rappelling gear, focused on examining the dense undergrowth around the waterfall and two rapids downstream, according to Revenue Minister K. Rajan.
  • On Tuesday, 1,174 personnel from various forces participated in the search, employing 85 earthmovers.

Vinesh makes a major impact in the wrestling world

After the wrestlers’ protests in India, a knee surgery, and doubts about her qualifications, the Indian wrestler first surprised Yui, then beat Livach, and finally easily won against Lopez.

  • Vinesh Phogat made history by reaching the women’s wrestling 50kg final at the Paris Games on Tuesday. She became the first Indian woman to achieve this, showing incredible determination despite many challenges.
  • After surprising World and Olympic champion Yui Susaki with a 3-2 win in the first round, Vinesh then beat Oksana Livach 7-5 in the quarter-finals and Cuba’s Yusneylis Guzman Lopez 5-0 in the semi-finals. She has now become the second Indian woman wrestler to win an Olympic medal, following Sakshi Malik.
  • Vinesh took advantage of the Cuban’s lack of aggression to lead 1-0 after the first period. He then used a right leg attack to score a takedown, bringing his lead to 3-0, and added two more points to make it 5-0.
  • After facing difficulties during last year’s wrestlers’ protest, dealing with uncertainties from knee surgery, and confusion about challenging Antim Panghal—who had secured the 53kg Olympic spot—two-time World bronze medalist Vinesh decided to enter the 50kg selection trials. She ended up winning a spot in the Olympics.
  • Despite the difficult challenge of drastically reducing her weight to fit into the category, Vinesh surprised Yui in their first match, leading her to the semifinals at the Champ de Mars arena. This was Yui’s first loss in an international competition; she had never lost in her 82 international matches.
  • For someone who had to be stretchered out of her quarterfinal match at the Rio Olympics after dislocating her knee, and who didn’t do well in Tokyo, Vinesh’s performance was impressive. She fights with both skill and strength, tackling challenges both on and off the mat.
  • Vinesh pulled off an unexpected victory against the top-seeded Yui. Her comeback in the final moments looked magical, but it was actually a smartly planned strategy, similar to a chess game.
  • Vinesh mostly stayed still and didn’t move much throughout the match, but she made her only attack with less than 20 seconds left.
  • Quickly noticing when Yui lost her balance while backing away, she took advantage and scored a takedown with nine seconds remaining. The two points she earned were enough for Vinesh to win, as her move earned more technical points.
  • In the five minutes and 42 seconds before that, Vinesh focused on defending. Since losing to Yui would probably mean staying in the bronze medal competition, the 29-year-old chose to conserve energy and give up as little ground as possible.
  • She lost a point in each round because she was passive, but she outwitted her opponent as time was running out. Yui, who was surprised, tried to challenge the call with a video, but it didn’t work and she lost another point.
  • Coach Woller Akos and a tearful Vinesh celebrated, marking what could be the biggest upset so far by an Indian athlete.
  • The two, who were criticized after the Tokyo Olympics and then trained intensely in Bengaluru and Spain for Paris, were overwhelmed by their performance, which altered the dynamics of the very competitive 50kg weight class.
  • “It was a miracle,” said Indian women’s head coach Virender Dahiya. Vinesh then refocused to handle a tough challenge from Livach.
  • The Indian wrestler’s takedown gave her a 2-0 lead in the first period. She extended her lead to 4-0 with a double leg attack. However, Oksana came back strongly and closed the gap to 4-2. The Ukrainian gained another point with a push-out, while Vinesh secured an additional point.
  • An Indian challenge failed, leaving the score at a close 5-4. Vinesh demonstrated her skill by scoring two more points and won the tough match, earning a spot in the semifinals against Guzman Lopez.
