Primary suspect in stampede incident apprehended; police expand investigation
Police apprehended Devprakash Madhukar in Delhi on Friday; they are investigating his political affiliations. Madhukar had fled after the stampede resulting in 121 deaths; his lawyer asserts that Madhukar surrendered voluntarily.
- Amid ongoing allegations and counter-allegations surrounding the Hathras stampede, where 121 people lost their lives at a religious gathering led by a self-proclaimed godman, the Uttar Pradesh Police announced on Saturday that they are investigating the political ties of the primary accused, Devprakash Madhukar. Madhukar was apprehended in Delhi on Friday.
- Speaking to reporters following the arrest, Superintendent of Police (Hathras) Nipun Agarwal stated that the accused had been involved in fundraising for the satsang (religious gathering) of Bhole Baba, also known as Narayan Sakar Hari, and had recently been in contact with multiple political parties regarding this matter.
- Bhole Baba, whose real name is Suraj Pal, formerly served as a policeman in Uttar Pradesh until the late 1990s. He subsequently rebranded himself as a godman and gained a substantial following in Uttar Pradesh and neighboring states.
- “During the investigation, he divulged that several political parties had recently sought him out. We are investigating whether the funding for the religious gatherings was supported by any political party. During questioning, we discovered that one political party is attempting to establish connections with him for potential political advantages,” Mr. Agarwal stated.
- The Superintendent of Police further commented that initially, it appears the organizers were fully aware that a stampede could occur at the venue if the crowd was not properly managed.
- The police officer stated, “We have determined that the event organizer allowed only Bhole Baba’s vehicle to pass and then neglected to manage the crowd, leaving them to fend for themselves. It was solely the organizers’ responsibility to ensure crowd management at the venue, which they failed to do.”
- He further mentioned that investigators are looking into whether the organizers deliberately allowed the stampede to occur, possibly under provocation from someone.
- The police made their statement several days after political accusations began regarding the tragic stampede. Addressing the Opposition’s claims, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath remarked that certain individuals have a habit of politicizing such unfortunate events. He alluded to the known associations and political ties of the individual in question [Bhole Baba], stressing the need for a thorough investigation into the matter.
- Several affiliates of the BJP were observed circulating photos showing Samajwadi Party chief Akhilesh Yadav attending a previous satsang of the godman. Madhukar fled the scene following the incident, which resulted in the loss of many lives. Police had also offered a ₹1 lakh reward for information leading to his arrest.
- The Uttar Pradesh police asserted they arrested Mr. Madhukar in Delhi, yet his lawyer A.P. Singh contended that his client voluntarily surrendered. Following Mr. Madhukar’s arrest, Narayan Sakar Hari issued a video statement urging his followers to cooperate with the investigation.
