Plastic Solutions

• The fourth round of negotiations of the Global plastic treaty that has at least 175 United Nations members has been done recently. The goal of this treaty is to eliminate the use of plastic around the globe.
• The objective of this round is to finalize a legal document by the end of 2024 to eliminate the use of plastic with time when countries must agree to various activities such as to reduce the use of plastic, curb plastic production, ban certain Chemicals and also set the target for recycling.
• The another round of the Global plastic treaty is scheduled to be held in Busan, South Korea.
• Some oil producing and refinery countries are not in a mood to strict timelines to eliminate plastic production.
• There is also a disagreement among the members to decide some contentious elements by vote or consensus.
• As per the discussion, countries must have common targets but at the same time more privileged countries must offer help to other underdeveloped countries.
• In 2022, India had finalized the Plastic Waste Management Amendment Rules 2021 and banned 19 categories of single use plastics.
• This ban doesn’t include plastic bottles and moreover still some places are there where these goods are still in use because of the failure of the uniform implementation of this rule.
• Brazil, China,India and the US together contribute 60% of global plastic waste.
• There is a dire need for greater investment in alternative products.
