• The report also stated that the pro-glacier lakes( lakes which formed during the retreat of melting glaciers) are increasing in numbers and the chances of glacier lake outburst flood GLOF are high and this is directly dangerous for the ecosystem.
• Sikkim has witnessed the devastating power of GLOF event this year when destruction of the Chungthang dam happened due to South Lhonak lake flooded from melting glaciers.
• The International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development has recently released a report stating that the glaciers on Hindu Kush Himalayas melted 65 percent faster than the last decade.
• If we take an example of the current global greenhouse emissions rate, we can expect an increase in global temperature by 2.5 to 3°C by the end of the century and 55 to 75 percent of glaciers will decline by the end of this century.
• The declination of glaciers around the world are directly responsible for the scarcity of freshwater supply in the early of 2050.
• Despite the threat scenarios of glaciers on the Himalayas still there are no early warning systems for events like GLOF.
• There is a need for careful Monitoring and early warning systems to identify the hazardous event of GLOF.
• Just like we have warning systems for earthquakes and cyclones, the world needs to establish and develop early warning systems for melting glaciers and the consequences of these melting glaciers.
• Glaciers must share the same threats and need the same importance as the cyclones and earthquakes get.
