Primacy to human development

• Two recently released reports provided a clear view about human development. These two reports are Human Development Report 2023-24 and a paper published by World Inequality Lab.
• These two reports portrayed not very encouraging trends in the aspect of human development in india.
• India has been placed at 134 in the list of 193 countries in the Human Development Report 2022 improved from the level of 2021 when India ranked 135 out of 192 countries.
• If we talk about HDI values then a little increment could be seen as 0.633 in 2021 and 0.644 in 2022.
• These reports highlighted some major concern on rising inequality and decreasing pace of human development.
• Inequalities between developed and underdeveloped countries in the HDI started to increase every year.
• The share of those people who control their lives is very low.
• As per the World Inequality Lab, the bottom 50% people got very less share of India’s National income as only 15% of India’s national income was contributing to these people in 2022-23.
• Further the report stated that the top 1% people of India earn on average 5.3 million which is 23 times higher than what an average Indian earns.
• This income Inequality in India is the reason for the increase of the top people’s income as compared to the rest of the population.
• The low level of human development, the high Inequality in income perspective and low saving rate and high debt raise concern and this is the time when Indian government must think about alternate growth strategy that ensures the primacy of human development.
