The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  10th December 2024

In the modern competitive era, most of the exams have English Language as a section. So here we bring you The Hindu Vocab on daily basis to enhance vocabulary power and help you prepare for the exams like Banking, Railway, Insurance, SSC, and other Government exams.

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Aptness (noun)

Meaning: the quality of being appropriate or suitable. (उपयुक्तता)

Synonyms: suitability, appropriateness, appropriacy

Antonyms: improperness, impropriety, inappositeness

Sentence: Michael’s long legs gave him an aptness for being a good track athlete.

  1. Predicament (noun)

Meaning: a difficult, unpleasant, or embarrassing situation. (कठिन परिस्थिति)

Synonyms: difficult situation, awkward situation, problematic situation

Sentence: If you had told the truth in the first place, we wouldn’t be in this predicament.

  1. Cede (verb)

Meaning: give up (power or territory). (त्यागना)

Synonyms: surrender, hand over, relinquish

Antonyms: keep, retain, withhold

Sentence: The General had promised to cede power by January.

  1. Curtail (verb)

Meaning: reduce in extent or quantity; impose a restriction on. (घटाना)

Synonyms: reduce, decrease, lessen

Antonyms: increase, maximize, boost

Sentence: We must try to curtail our spending.

  1. Provenance (noun)

Meaning: the place of origin or earliest known history of something. (उत्पत्ति)

Synonyms: origin, source, place of origin

Sentence: The provenance of the paintings is unknown.

  1. Doldrums (noun)

Meaning: a state or period of inactivity, stagnation, or depression. (निष्क्रिय)

Synonyms: inactive, quiet, dormancy

Antonyms: continuance, continuation

Sentence: Recent economic doldrums have damaged the rural west.

  1. Revered (verb)

Meaning: feel deep respect or admiration for (something). (सम्मान)

Synonyms: respect, admire, esteem

Antonyms: blasphemed, desecrated, profaned

Sentence: Nelson Mandela is revered for his brave fight against apartheid.

  1. Willy-nilly (adv.)

Meaning: without definite aim, direction, rule, or method (बिना सोचे समझे)

Synonyms: aimlessly, desultorily, randomly

Antonyms: methodically, systematically

Sentence: The government was dragged willy-nilly into the confrontation.

  1. Federate (verb)

Meaning: (with reference to a number of states or organizations) form or be formed into a single centralized unit, within which each state or organization keeps some internal autonomy. (एक संस्था में सम्मिलित करना)

Synonyms: confederate, combine, ally

Antonyms: segregate, separate, split

Sentence: in 1901 the six colonies federated to form the Commonwealth of Australia

  1. Pittance (noun)

Meaning: a very small or inadequate amount of money paid to someone as an allowance or wage. (अल्प भाग)

Synonyms: very small amount, a tiny amount, an insufficient amount

Antonyms: big buck, treasure

Sentence: The internship offers only a pittance for a salary, but it is a great opportunity to gain experience.
