‘Vocabulary’
- Hobnobbed (verb)
Meaning: mix socially, especially with those of higher social status. (सामाजिक रूप से मिलना)
Synonyms: associate, mix, fraternize
Antonyms: eschewed, shunned, alienated
Sentence: He was often seen hobnobbing with influential business people.
- Revered (verb)
Meaning: feel deep respect or admiration for (something). (सम्मान)
Synonyms: respect, admire, esteem
Antonyms: blasphemed, desecrated, profaned
Sentence: Nelson Mandela is revered for his brave fight against apartheid.
- Quell (verb)
Meaning: put an end to (a rebellion or other disorder), typically by the use of force. (शांत करना)
Synonyms: end, finish, get rid of
Antonyms: support, foment, incite
Sentence: Soldiers were sent in to quell the riots.
- Adulate (verb)
Meaning: praise (someone) excessively or obsequiously. (झूठी प्रशंसा करना)
Synonyms: laud, blarney, butter up
Antonyms: belittle, decry, depreciate
Sentence: They are fools who adulate every decision of their leaders.
- Cursory (adj.)
Meaning: hasty and therefore not thorough or detailed. (जल्दबाजी)
Synonyms: perfunctory, desultory, casual
Antonyms: deliberate, unhurried, unrushed
Sentence: He put aside the papers after a cursory study.
- Surmised (verb)
Meaning: suppose that something is true without having evidence to confirm it. (अनुमान लगाया)
Synonyms: guess, conjecture, suspect
Antonyms: ascertained, determined, proved
Sentence: From his letter, I surmised that he was unhappy.
- Rescinding (verb)
Meaning: revoke, cancel, or repeal (a law, order, or agreement). (रद्द कर देना)
Synonyms: revoke, repeal, abrogate
Antonyms: continuing, keeping, initiating
Sentence: Now I’m thinking of rescinding employee ownership, although there is some difficulty in doing that.
- Vacate (verb)
Meaning: leave (a place that one previously occupied). (खाली)
Synonyms: leave, get out of, move out of
Antonyms: fill, load
Sentence: Rooms must be vacated by noon on the last day of your vacation.
- Avidity (noun)
Meaning: extreme eagerness or enthusiasm. (उत्कट इच्छा)
Synonyms: enthusiasm, keenness, eagerness
Antonyms: apathy, indifference
Sentence: He read detective stories with avidity.
- Evanescent (adj.)
Meaning: soon passing out of sight, memory, or existence; quickly fading or disappearing. (क्षणभंगुर)
Synonyms: vanishing, fading, fleeting
Antonyms: endless, eternal, everlasting
Sentence: Talk is evanescent but the writing leaves footprints.
