The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  10th January 2024

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Perused (verb)

Meaning: read (something), typically thoroughly or carefully. (ध्यान से पढ़ना)

Synonyms: read, reviewed, studied

Sentence: After breakfast, he perused the newspapers.

  1. Lucent (adj.)

Meaning: glowing with or giving off light. (प्रकाशमान)

Synonyms: luminous, glowing, shining

Antonyms: dim, dusky, dark

Sentence: The moon was a lucent orb in the cloudless autumn sky.

  1. Milieus (noun)

Meaning: the circumstances, conditions, or objects by which one is surrounded (परिवेश)

Synonyms: environments, surroundings, contexts

Sentence: He grew up in a military milieu.

  1. Debilitating (verb)

Meaning: making someone very weak and infirm. (दुर्बल करना)

Synonyms: weakening, enfeebling, enervating

Antonyms: strengthening, energizing, fortifying

Sentence: Huge debts are debilitating their economy.

  1. Cantankerous (adj.)

Meaning: bad-tempered, argumentative, and uncooperative. (झगड़ालू)

Synonyms: bad-tempered, irascible, crotchety

Antonyms: amiable, pleasant, friendly

Sentence: He’s getting a bit cantankerous in his old age.

  1. Excursion (noun)

Meaning: a short journey or trip, especially one engaged in as a leisure activity. (भ्रमण)

Synonyms: tour, jaunt, trip

Sentence: We went on an excursion to the city.

  1. Encompassed (verb)

Meaning: surround and have or hold within. (घेरना)

Synonyms: surround, enclose, circumscribe

Antonyms: exposed, denuded

Sentence: The enemy encompassed the city.

  1. Legible (adj.)

Meaning: (of handwriting or print) clear enough to read. (पढ़ने योग्य)

Synonyms: readable, comprehensible, clear

Antonyms: incomprehensible, incoherent, obscure

Sentence: The original typescript is scarcely legible.

  1. Ever and anon (phrase)

Meaning: on some occasions (कभी-कभी)

Synonyms: sometimes, now, occasionally

Antonyms: frequently, commonly, usually

Sentence: He loses his temper ever and anon.

  1. Prattle (noun)

Meaning: unintelligible or meaningless talk (बकवास करना)

Synonyms: babble, nonsense, chatter

Sentence: Don’t prattle about your theory. You must practice it and prove it.
