The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  10th November 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Recusant (noun)

Meaning: a person who refuses to submit to an authority or to comply with a regulation. (विद्रोही)

Synonyms: rebellious, stubborn, oppositionist

Antonyms: submissive, amiable, compliant

Sentence: Several recusants refused to vote as commanded by the party leadership.

  1. Bon vivant (noun)

Meaning: a person who enjoys a sociable and luxurious lifestyle, especially good food and wine. (भुक्खड़)

Synonyms: gourmet, savorer, gastronomist

Sentence: He is a bon vivant who loves to hold dinner parties and serve exquisite, elaborate meals

  1. Careen (verb)

Meaning: to move forward while swaying from side to side (झुक जाना)

Meaning: an ignorant or stupid person. (मूर्ख)

Meaning: to charge (someone) too much for goods or services (अधिशूल्क)

Meaning: a person who is passionate about a particular cause, typically inciting change and taking radical action. (आंदोलनकर्त्ता)

  1. Legible (adj.)

Meaning: (of handwriting or print) clear enough to read. (पढ़ने योग्य)

Synonyms: readable, comprehensible, clear

Antonyms: incomprehensible, incoherent, obscure

  1. Smidge (noun)

Meaning: a very small amount (छोटा भाग)

Synonyms: bit, ounce, tad

Antonyms: lot, plenty, loads

Meaning: (of a product) made or used as a substitute, typically an inferior one, for something else. (कृत्रिम वस्तु)

Synonyms: synthetic, substitute, artificial

Antonyms: real, genuine, authentic

Sentence: He tried to scam the customers by selling them ersatz products.

  1. Foiled (verb)

Meaning: prevent (something considered wrong or undesirable) from succeeding. (विफल करना)

Synonyms: hampered, baffled, hindered

Antonyms: encouraged, advanced, assisted

Sentence: The enemy’s attack was foiled.
