The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  11th May 2026

  1. Delve (verb)

Meaning: reach inside a receptacle and search for something. (खोजना)

Synonyms: rummage (around) in, search (through), hunt through

Sentence: It’s not always a good idea to delve too deeply into someone’s past.

  1. Impinge (verb)

Meaning: have an effect or impact, especially a negative one. (प्रभावित करना)

Synonyms: affect, have an effect on, influence

Sentence: She didn’t allow her personal problems to impinge on her work.

  1. Trenchant (adj.)

Meaning: vigorous or incisive in expression or style. (कटु)

Synonyms: rapierlike, vigorous

Antonyms: dull, soft

Sentence: He was shattered and bewildered by this trenchant criticism.

  1. Repudiate (verb)

Meaning: refuse to accept or be associated with. (अस्वीकार करना)

Synonyms: reject, renounce, abandon

Antonyms: accept, affirm, embrace

Sentence: She has repudiated policies associated with previous party leaders.

  1. Pomp (noun)

Meaning: ceremony and splendid display, especially at a public event. (वैभव)

Synonyms: ceremony, grandeur, pageantry

Antonyms: simplicity, severity

Sentence: The coronation was conducted with great pomp.

  1. Sundry (adj.)

Meaning: of various kinds; several (विविध)

Synonyms: various, varied, miscellaneous

Antonyms: alike, identical, like

Sentence: This cream can be used to treat sundry minor injuries.

  1. Scintillate (verb)

Meaning: emit flashes of light; sparkle. (चमकना)

Synonyms: spark, sparkle, shine

Antonyms: dark, dim

Sentence: The diamond ring scintillated in the sunlight.

  1. Annulled (verb)

Meaning: declare invalid (an official agreement, decision, or result). (रद्द करना)

Synonyms: declare invalid, nullify, invalidate

Antonyms: allowed, approved, authorized

Sentence: His second marriage was annulled because he never divorced his first wife.

  1. Enthuse (verb)

Meaning: say something that expresses one’s eager enjoyment, interest, or approval. (अति उत्साहित करना)

Synonyms: rave, be enthusiastic, gush

Sentence: A good retailer will enthuse his stock and tempt you to try new foods.

  1. Provenance (noun)

Meaning: the place of origin or earliest known history of something. (उत्पत्ति)

Synonyms: origin, source, place of origin

Sentence: The provenance of the paintings is unknown.
