The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  12th June 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Turncoat (noun)

Meaning: a person who deserts one party or cause in order to join an opposing one. (विश्वासघाती)

Synonyms: traitor, apostate, backstabber

Sentence: He was publicly criticized as a turncoat and a traitor.

  1. Hanker (verb)

Meaning: feel a strong desire for or to do something. (लालायित होना)

Synonyms: yearn, crave, desire

Antonyms: abhor, abominate, despise

Sentence: What did you hanker after most when you were in prison?

  1. Slipshod (adj.)

Meaning: (typically of a person or method of work) characterized by a lack of care, thought, or organization. (असावधानीपूर्ण)

Synonyms: careless, lackadaisical, slapdash

Antonyms: attentive, careful, conscientious

Sentence: He’d caused many problems with his slipshod management.

  1. Dislodge (verb)

Meaning: knock or force out of position. (हटाना)

Synonyms: remove, move, shift

Meaning: recover from illness or exertion. (स्वस्थ हो जाना)

Synonyms: get better, recover, convalesce

Meaning: a state of despair, typically one which results in rash or extreme behavior. (निराशा)

  1. Roistering (verb)

Meaning: enjoy oneself or celebrate in a noisy or boisterous way. (समारोह मनाना)

Synonyms: enjoy oneself, celebrate, revel

Antonyms: hushed, noiseless, quiet

Sentence: His son had spent the best part of his youth roistering and gambling.

  1. Vehemence (noun)

Meaning: the display of strong feeling; passion. (उत्साह)

Synonyms: passion, ardor, fervor

Antonyms: impassiveness, impassivity, aloofness

Sentence: She was astonished at his vehemence.
