The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  12th May 2023

 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Sham (noun)

Meaning: a thing that is not what it is purported to be. (दिखावा)

Synonyms: pretense, fake, act

Antonyms: real, genuine, authentic

Sentence: The latest crime figures are a complete sham.

  1. Frenzy (noun)

Meaning: a state or period of uncontrolled excitement or wild behavior. (उन्माद)

Synonyms: hysteria, madness, mania

Antonyms: calm, calmness, peace

Sentence: In a frenzy of rage she hit him.

  1. Badger (verb)

Meaning: repeatedly ask (someone) to do something; pester. (परेशान करना)

Synonyms: tease, pester, bother

Sentence: Don’t constantly badger people with stupid questions.

  1. Gale (noun)

Meaning: a very strong wind. (आंधी)

Synonyms: storm, hurricane, windstorm

Sentence: It was blowing a gale outside.

  1. Subvert (verb)

Meaning: undermine the power and authority of (an established system or institution). (नाश करना)

Synonyms: destabilize, unsettle, overthrow

Antonyms: elevate, ennoble, uplift

Sentence: By insisting that she pay me for helping her, she subverted my noble

desire to do a good deed without reward.

  1. Monger (noun)

Meaning: denoting a dealer or trader in a specified commodity. (विक्रेता)

Synonyms: trader, merchant, vendor

Antonyms: customer, buyer, consumer

Sentence: The old man was a monger in tea.

  1. Fickleness (noun)

Meaning: changeability, especially as regards one’s loyalties or affections. (अस्थिरता)

Synonyms: capriciousness, changeability, variability

Antonyms: invariability, constancy

Sentence: What provides stability to the fickleness of love is the material framework of marriage.

  1. Vernacular (noun)

Meaning: the language or dialect spoken by the ordinary people in a particular country or region. (मातृभाषा)

Synonyms: everyday language, spoken language

Sentence: Galileo wrote in the vernacular to reach a larger audience.

  1. Libel (noun)

Meaning: a published false statement that is damaging to a person’s reputation; a written defamation. (निंदलेख)

Synonyms: defamation, misrepresentation, vilification

Antonyms: praise, respect, commendation

Sentence: The governor’s office issued a statement accusing the state’s largest newspaper of libel.

  1. Larceny (noun)

Meaning: the unlawful taking and carrying away of property without the consent of its owner (चोरी)

Synonyms: theft, stealing, robbery

Sentence: The man was imprisoned for larceny.
