The Hindu Editorial VOCAB:  12th September 2022

‘Vocabulary’

  1. Mitigate (verb)

Meaning: make it less severe, serious, or painful. (कम करना)

Synonyms: alleviate, reduce, diminish

Antonyms: aggravate, exacerbate

Sentence: He wanted to mitigate misery in the world.

  1. Fissiparous (adj.)

Meaning: inclined to cause or undergo division into separate parts or groups. (विभाजित)

Synonyms: division, partition, separation

Antonyms: assemblage, association

Sentence: High-quality, fissiparous yeast can resist high temperature, it is available for summer production, and has a low-down energy cost.

  1. Mediocrity (noun)

Meaning: the quality or state of being mediocre. (सामान्यता)

Synonyms: ordinariness, commonplaceness, averageness

Antonyms: distinction, excellence, excellency

Sentence: She’s a perfectionist who refuses to settle for mediocrity.

  1. Amassed (verb)

Meaning: gather together or accumulate (a large amount or number of valuable material or things) over a period of time. (जमा कर रखे)

Synonyms: gather, collect, assemble

Antonyms: dispelled, dispersed, dissipated

Sentence: They amassed huge wealth by plundering the colonies.

  1. Pauper (noun)

Meaning: a very poor person. (कंगाल)

Synonyms: poor person, indigent, bankrupt

Antonyms: affluent, billionaire, tycoon

Sentence: He died a pauper and is buried in an unmarked grave.

  1. Quietus (noun)

Meaning: death or something that causes death, regarded as a release from life. (मरण)

Synonyms: death, decease, demise

Antonyms: birth, nativity, Existence

Sentence: After weeks of suffering, the cancer-stricken cat received a quietus of the pain by taking her final nap.

  1. Pretense (noun)

Meaning: an attempt to make something, not the case appear true. (दिखावा)

Synonyms: make-believe, act, faking

Antonyms: demureness, sincerity

Sentence: I’m just astounded by you and your pretense.

  1. Inopportune (adj.)

Meaning: occurring at an inconvenient or inappropriate time. (बेवक़्त)

Synonyms: untimely, ill-timed, badly timed

Antonyms: timely, expected

Sentence: They arrived at an inopportune moment.

  1. Penchant (noun)

Meaning: a strong or habitual liking for something or tendency to do something. (लगन)

Synonyms: liking, fondness, preference

Antonyms: apathy, dislike, distaste

Sentence: She has a penchant for Indian food.

  1. Raucous (adj.)

Meaning: making or constituting a disturbingly harsh and loud noise. (कर्कश)

Synonyms: harsh, strident, screeching

Antonyms: sedate, sober, quiet

Sentence: I heard the raucous call of the crows.
