 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Quip (noun)

Meaning: something said or done to cause laughter (चुटकुला)

Synonyms: joke, laugh, joking

Sentence: The crowd laughed aloud at the author’s clever quip

  1. Rapport (noun)

Meaning: a friendly relationship marked by ready communication and mutual understanding

Synonyms: friendship, solidarity, communion

Antonyms: alienation, disaffection, estrangement

Sentence: He had an excellent rapport with his patients.

  1. Deprivation (noun)

Meaning: the state of being robbed of something normally enjoyed (अभाव)

Synonyms: lack, loss, privation

Antonyms: control, ownership, possession

Sentence: They had withstood siege, hunger, and deprivation.

  1. Debility (noun)

Meaning: the quality or state of lacking physical strength or vigor (दुर्बलता)

Synonyms: weakness, exhaustion, fatigue

Antonyms: strength, energy, health

Sentence: Our grandmother’s debility is due in large part to her advanced age

  1. looming (verb)

Meaning: appear as a shadowy form, especially one that is large or threatening. (उभरते)

Synonyms: emerge, appear

Antonyms: abating, declining

Sentence: Rain clouds were looming on the horizon.

  1. Sludge (noun)

Meaning: thick, soft, wet mud or a similar viscous mixture of liquid and solid components, especially the product of an industrial or refining process. (कीचड़)

Synonyms: mud, muck, mire

Sentence: All dumping of sludge will be banned by 1998.

  1. Amnesty (noun)

Meaning: an official pardon for people who have been convicted of political offenses. (आम माफ़ी)

Synonyms: pardon, pardoning. reprieve

Antonyms: penalty, punishment, retribution

Sentence: The government granted an amnesty to all political prisoners.

  1. Ominous (adj.)

Meaning: giving the impression that something bad or unpleasant is going to happen; threatening; inauspicious. (अमंगल)

Synonyms: threatening, menacing, baleful

Antonyms: unthreatening, auspicious, benign

Sentence: There was an ominous silence at the other end of the phone.

  1. Unenviable (adj.)

Meaning: difficult, undesirable, or unpleasant. (अवांछनीय)

Synonyms: disagreeable, unpleasant, undesirable

Antonyms: charming, enchanting, fascinating

Sentence: Cooper had the unenviable job of announcing the redundancies.

  1. Felicitate (verb)

Meaning: to express to (someone) admiration for his or her success or good fortune (अभिनंदन करना)

Synonyms: compliment, congratulate, applaud

Antonyms: cry down, decry, deprecate

Sentence: The broken glass lacerated his feet.
