Iran and the U.S. trade blame as negotiations collapse

  • The United States and Iran had direct, face-to-face talks in Pakistan on Sunday, but the talks ended without any agreement. Both sides blamed each other for the failure, and their differences were not solved, which has put the weak two-week ceasefire in West Asia in danger.
  • S. officials said that the talks failed because Iran did not agree to promise that it would stop moving toward making a nuclear weapon.
  • On the other hand, Iranian officials said the talks failed because of what they called “U.S. overreach” (too many demands), but they did not clearly explain the exact reasons for the disagreement.
  • Neither the United States nor Iran clearly said what will happen after the ceasefire ends on April 22, which has created uncertainty about the future.
  • Pakistan’s Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar said that Pakistan will try to help both sides start talks again in the coming days.
  • After the 21-hour-long talks, U.S. Vice-President D. Vance said that the U.S. wants a clear and strong promise from Iran that it will not make nuclear weapons and will not even build the ability to quickly make them.
  • Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, who led Iran’s team, said that now it is up to the United States to show that it can be trusted by Iran.
  • He also said that Iran showed goodwill (positive intention) during the talks by giving some positive suggestions, which helped the talks move forward a little.
  • Earlier, Iranian officials had said that the talks failed because of two or three major issues, but they did not explain them, again blaming S. overreach.
  • Pakistan’s Foreign Minister stressed that it is very important for both sides to keep following and respecting the ceasefire agreement.
  • Iran has always denied that it wants to make nuclear weapons, but it strongly says that it has the right to use nuclear energy for peaceful purposes.
  • Iran had earlier given written promises (like in the 2015 nuclear deal) to show that its nuclear programme is only for peaceful use.
  • Experts say that Iran’s current enriched uranium is not yet ready for weapons, but it is very close and can become weapons-grade with a small technical step.
  • Since the war started on February 28 by the United States and Israel, it has caused huge destruction and loss of life. At least 3,000 people have died in Iran, 2,020 in Lebanon, 23 in Israel, and more than a dozen in Gulf Arab countries.
  • The war has also caused serious and long-term damage to infrastructure in at least six countries in West Asia.
  • Iran’s control over the Strait of Hormuz has disturbed the supply of oil and gas to the world, which has caused a sharp increase in energy prices.
  • The current deadlock in talks, along with D. Vance’s strict demand that Iran must completely stop its nuclear programme, is similar to the failed talks held in Switzerland in February.
  • Although U.S. President Donald Trump said that the war was meant to force Iran to give up its nuclear plans, both sides did not change their positions even after six weeks of fighting.
  • An Iranian diplomatic official (who did not reveal his name) said that the talks did not fail because of Iran’s nuclear plans.
  • The official repeated that Iran is not trying to make nuclear weapons, but it has the right to use nuclear energy peacefully.
  • There was no clear update on whether talks will start again, but Iran said that it is ready to continue talks, according to its news agency IRNA.
  • The United States and Iran came into the talks with very different ideas and expectations about their power and influence, which made agreement difficult.
  • Even before the talks began, the ceasefire was already in danger because of serious disagreements and continued Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon.

Electorate declines by 10.2% across nine States and three Union Territories after voter list revision

  • Among the nine States and three Union Territories (UTs) where the voter list revision was done, Uttar Pradesh had the highest number of deleted voters (2.04 crore), followed by West Bengal (83.86 lakh deletions).
  • In terms of percentage, the Andaman and Nicobar Islands had the highest deletion (16.6%), while Lakshadweep had the lowest (only 181 voters or 0.3%).
  • According to Election Commission (EC) data, 67 lakh dead voters and 1.28 crore duplicate voters were removed during this phase, which started on October 27 last year.
  • The revision also found 34 crore fake or non-existent voters and 3.15 crore voters who had shifted to other places (migrated).
  • After the revision, the total number of voters in these areas fell by 10.2%, reducing the count to 81 crore from more than 50.99 crore earlier.
  • As per EC data, 88 lakh dead voters were removed, with the highest from Uttar Pradesh (25.47 lakh), followed by West Bengal (24.16 lakh).
  • A total of 28 crore duplicate voters were removed, and again Uttar Pradesh had the highest number (79.5 lakh).
  • Also, 16 lakh names were deleted after objections and checking through Form 7, with West Bengal having the highest (33.15 lakh).
  • Phase 2 of this revision covered Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Rajasthan, Chhattisgarh, Kerala, Puducherry, Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Lakshadweep, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, and Goa.
  • In Assam, a different type of revision called “special revision” was done instead of this process.
  • The next phase will cover 17 States and five UTs, and it is expected to start after the Assembly elections.
  • These include Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Dadra and Nagar Haveli & Daman and Diu, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir, Jharkhand, Karnataka, Ladakh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Delhi, Odisha, Punjab, Sikkim, Tripura, Telangana, and Uttarakhand.

Trump warns of Hormuz blockade after U.S.–Iran talks collapse

  • Donald Trump said on Sunday that the S. Navy will immediately start blocking ships from entering or leaving the Strait of Hormuz, after the talks between the U.S. and Iran failed in Pakistan.
  • He said on his platform Truth Social that the S. Navy (which he called the best in the world) will stop all ships passing through the Strait immediately.
  • He also warned that if Iran attacks U.S. forces or peaceful ships, it will face very strong military action (“blown to hell”), showing a very tough stand.
  • At first, he said that other countries will also join the blockade, and later told a Fox News programme that the United Kingdom and some others may send minesweepers to help.
  • The main aim of this move is to control the Strait of Hormuz (through which about 20% of the world’s oil passes) so that Iran loses its ability to put economic pressure.
  • He also said that he has ordered the Navy to stop and check every ship that has paid any toll to Iran, and such ships will not be allowed to pass safely.
  • Trump further said that the S. is ready to completely defeat Iran at the right time, and again blamed Iran’s nuclear plans for the failure of talks.
  • He also warned China that it could face a 50% tariff on its goods in the U.S. if it supports Iran militarily.
  • Meanwhile, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf said that Iran will not give in to threats after the U.S. announced the blockade.
  • Iran’s military group, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), warned that it will strongly respond to any military ships in the Strait of Hormuz.
  • According to Iran’s broadcaster IRIB, the IRGC Navy said it has full control over the Strait in a careful and planned way.
  • This warning came after the U.S. military said that two U.S. Navy ships had already crossed the Strait to remove mines placed by Iran.
  • The IRGC Navy further said that any military ship trying to pass will face strict action, and that only civilian ships may be allowed, and that too under certain conditions.
