‘Vocabulary’
- Weasel (adj.)
Meaning: a deceitful or treacherous person. (चालक आदमी)
Synonyms: scoundrel, wretch, serpent
Antonyms: innocent, saint
Sentence: He was a double-crossing weasel.
- Impresario (noun)
Meaning: a person who organizes and often finances concerts, plays, or operas. (आयोजक)
Synonyms: organizer, manager, producer
Sentence: It was the actor’s dream to work under the renowned impresario.
- Dissension (noun)
Meaning: disagreement that leads to discord. (मतभेद)
Synonyms: disagreement, difference of opinion, dispute
Antonyms: accord, agreement, concord
Sentence: You won’t sow dissension between us.
- Exiguous (adj.)
Meaning: very small in size or amount. (अल्प)
Synonyms: meagre, inadequate, insufficient
Antonyms: abundant, ample, bountiful
Sentence: The rest of the old man’s exiguous savings are donated to that boy.
- Minatory (adj.)
Meaning: expressing or conveying a threat. (धमकी)
Synonyms: menacing, threatening, baleful
Antonyms: unthreatening, propitious
Sentence: The novel’s protagonist is haunted by a minatory black spectre.
- Atavistic (adj.)
Meaning: relating to or characterized by reversion to something ancient or ancestral. (पैतृक)
Synonyms: bygone, erstwhile, former
Antonyms: contemporary, current, modern
Sentence: It would be wrong to interpret them as atavistic remnants.
- Acolytes (noun)
Meaning: one who follows the opinions or teachings of another (अनुयायी)
Synonyms: adherents, converts, disciples
Antonyms: defectors, renegades, traitors
Sentence: He is flanked by his two acolytes, Asanga and his brother, Vasubandhu.
- Pruned (verb)
Meaning: to make (something) shorter or smaller with the use of a cutting instrument (कम कर दिए हैं)
Synonyms: bobbed, clipped, cropped
Antonyms: elongated, extended, lengthened
Sentence: He pruned the dead branches from the old apple tree.
- Pomp (noun)
Meaning: ceremony and splendid display, especially at a public event. (वैभव)
Synonyms: ceremony, grandeur, pageantry
Antonyms: simplicity, severity
Sentence: The coronation was conducted with great pomp.
- Con (verb)
Meaning: persuade (someone) to do or believe something, typically by use of deception. (ठगना)
Synonyms: swindle, defraud, cheat
Antonyms: undeceive, disclose
Sentence: Tried to con me into thinking that he had won the lottery.
