 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Benignant (adj.)

Meaning: Having or marked by sympathy and consideration for others (महरबान)

Synonyms: Compassionate, benevolent, kind

Antonyms: Savage, unkind, vicious

Sentence: A benignant understanding of the daily struggles of the economically disadvantaged

  1. Rescind (verb)

Meaning: To put an end to (रोक देना)

Synonyms: Cancel, revoke, abandon

Antonyms: Continue, keep, begin

Sentence: The library refused to rescind its decision to include the controversial book in its collection

  1. Seclude (noun)

Meaning: To set or keep apart from others (एकांत)

Synonyms: Isolate, separate, segregate

Antonyms: Integrate, join, connect

Meaning: Something that is or may be inherited (वसीयत)

Synonyms: Inheritance, legacy, gift

  1. Vagaries (noun)

Meaning: A sudden impulsive and apparently unmotivated idea or action (अनिश्चितता)

Synonyms: Whims, notions, caprices

Sentence: The vagaries of a rather eccentric, elderly lady

  1. Reproach (noun)

Meaning: A cause of shame (निन्दा)

Synonyms: Disgrace, scandal, reflection

Antonyms: Credit, honor, pride

Sentence: Your public display of boorish behavior is a reproach to this entire school

  1. Transcendence (noun)

Meaning: The fact or state of being above others in rank or importance (श्रेष्ठता)

Synonyms: Dominance, superiority, distinction

Antonyms: Insignificance, inferiority, mediocrity

Sentence: They long for transcendence, but their individual anguish is alleviated by the knowledge that they share their fate.

  1. Comeuppance (noun)

Meaning: A punishment or fate that someone deserves. (फटकारना)

Synonyms: Punishment, wrath, penalty

Antonyms: Pardon, vindication, indemnity

Sentence: That boy was comeuppance a lot for his foolishness.

  1. Glee (noun)

Meaning: A mood characterized by high spirits and amusement and often accompanied by laughter (उल्लास)

Synonyms: Cheerfulness, merriness, cheer

Antonyms: Sorrow, sadness, unhappiness

Sentence: The evident glee with which the tabloids report on the misfortunes of celebrities

  1. Sequestration (nou)

Meaning: The state of being alone or kept apart from others (ज़ब्ती)

Synonyms: Solitude, isolation, privacy

Antonyms: Society, company, fellowship

Sentence: What would you bring for sequestration on a desert island?
