 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Pulverize (verb)

Meaning: reduce to fine particles. (टुकड़े टुकड़े करना)

Synonyms: grind, crush, crumble

Antonyms: build, construct, set up

Sentence: The brick of the villages was pulverized by the bombardment.

  1. Thwart (verb)

Meaning: prevent (someone) from accomplishing something. (बिगाड़ना)

Synonyms: foil, baffle, hinder

Antonyms: nurture, promote, assist

Sentence: I don’t think that will thwart our purposes.

  1. Frantic (adj.)

Meaning: wild or distraught with fear, anxiety, or other emotion. (उन्मत्त)

Synonyms: panic-stricken, panic-struck, panicky

Antonyms: calm, peaceful, placid

  1. Glut (noun)

Meaning: an excessively abundant supply of something. (भरमार)

Synonyms:  surplus, excess, surfeit

Antonyms: dearth, scarcity, shortage

Sentence: There is a glut of cars on the market.

  1. Malevolent (adj.)

Meaning: having or showing a wish to do evil to others. (द्रोही)

Synonyms: malicious, spiteful, hostile

Antonyms: benignant, loving, noble

Sentence: We must thwart his malevolent schemes.

  1. Endeavor (verb)

Meaning: try hard to do or achieve something. (प्रयास)

Synonyms: try, attempt, venture

Antonyms: drop, give up, quit

Sentence: We always endeavor to please our customers.

  1. Maunder (verb)

Meaning: talk in a rambling manner. (गुनगुनाना)

Synonyms: ramble, prattle, prate

Sentence: The drunk sat there maundering about his troubles.

  1. Pejorative (adj.)

Meaning: expressing contempt or disapproval. (अपमानजनक)

Synonyms: disparaging, derogatory, insulting

Antonyms: appreciative, respectful, laudatory

Sentence: I agree I am ambitious, and I don’t see that as a pejorative term.

  1. Ensconce (verb)

Meaning: establish or settle (someone) in a comfortable, safe, or secret place. (स्थापित करना)

Synonyms: settle, install, establish

Sentence: Agnes ensconced herself in their bedroom.

  1. Adieu (Noun)

Meaning: A goodbye (विदाई)

Synonyms: goodbye, farewell

Antonyms: greeting, welcome

Sentence: They bade both the merchant and his paramour adieu.
