‘Vocabulary’
- Ayes and nays (adv.)
Meaning: as in yes or no (हां और ना)
Sentence: The ayes and nays of the final vote are not recorded.
- Dour (adj.)
Meaning: relentlessly severe, stern, or gloomy in manner or appearance. (कठोर)
Synonyms: stern, unsmiling, unfriendly
Antonyms: benign, friendly, gentle
Sentence: No wonder he looked so dour.
- Anathema (noun)
Meaning: something or someone that one vehemently dislikes. (अभिशाप)
Synonyms: abhorrent, hateful, odious
Antonyms: joy, pleasure
Sentence: His political views were anathema to me.
- Wherewithal (noun)
Meaning: the money or other means needed for a particular purpose. (साधन)
Synonyms: resources, assets, means
Sentence: He didn’t have the wherewithal to repay the loan.
- Bankrolled (verb)
Meaning: support (a person, organization, or project) financially. (आर्थिक रूप से समर्थन करना)
Synonyms: finance, pay for, funded
Antonyms: defunded
Sentence: Several corporations bankrolled the Broadway musical.
- Embargo (noun)
Meaning: impose an official ban on (trade or a country or commodity). (व्यापार प्रतिषेध)
Synonyms: ban, prohibition, injunction
Antonyms: sanction, authorization, licensing
Sentence: They have put an embargo on imports of clothing.
- Muddle (noun)
Meaning: bring into a disordered or confusing state. (अव्यवस्था)
Synonyms: mess, confusion, jumbled
Antonyms: order, pattern, method
Sentence: The papers are all in a muddle.
- Quashing (verb)
Meaning: reject or void, especially by legal procedure. (रद्द करने)
Synonyms: cancel, reverse, rescind
Antonyms: enact, establish, endorse
Sentence: His conviction was quashed on appeal.
- Injunction (noun)
Meaning: an authoritative warning or order. (निषेधाज्ञा)
Synonyms: order, decree, edict
Sentence: They have obtained an injunction restraining the company from selling the product.
- Dunce (noun)
Meaning: a person who is slow at learning; a stupid person. (मूर्ख)
Synonyms: fool, idiot, stupid person
Antonyms: brainy, genius, intellect
Sentence: It is very impolite to call others a dunce.
