 ‘Vocabulary’

  1. Prior (adj.)

Meaning: coming before all others in importance (पूर्व)

Synonyms: primary, first, earliest

Antonyms: last, least, minor

Sentence: I was given no prior notification.

  1. Huckster (noun)

Meaning: one who sells things outdoors (फेरीवाला)

Synonyms: vendor, pedlar, seller

Antonyms: purchaser, buyer, consumer

Sentence: Hucksters go to people’s homes and sell their goods.

  1. Exigent (adj.)

Meaning: needing immediate attention (अत्यावश्यक)

Synonyms: urgent, extreme, immediate

Antonyms: minor, incidental, trivial

Sentence: So, it is an important and exigent problem to estimate the software project size.

  1. Mien (noun)

Meaning: the outward form of someone or something especially as indicative of a quality (स्वभाव)

Synonyms: look, complexion, presence

Sentence: His aristocratic mien and smart clothes singled him out.

  1. Menial (noun)

Meaning: a person hired to perform household or personal services (सेवक)

Synonyms: servant, housekeeper, maid

Antonyms: master, mistress, foreman

Sentence: Immigrants to that country faced fierce prejudice and could expect to find work only as menials

  1. Intuition (noun)

Meaning: an innate sense of what is true or what will happen (अंतर्ज्ञान)

Synonyms: instinct, insight, feel

Sentence: Although the child looked fine, the parents’ intuition told them something was wrong.

  1. Senescence (noun)

Meaning: the state of being old or the process of becoming old (बुढ़ापा)

Synonyms: senility, age, dotage

Antonyms: freshness, youthfulness, adolescence

Sentence: Senescence of clones is probably caused by the accumulation of deleterious mutations.

  1. Doff (verb)

Meaning: to rid oneself of (a garment) (उतारना)

Synonyms: remove, peel (off), put off

Antonyms: don, throw (on), wear

Sentence: The blazing sun sooner had the men doffing their jackets

  1. Relinquishment (noun)

Meaning: the usually forced yielding of one’s person or possessions to the control of another (त्याग)

Synonyms: surrender, submission, cession

Sentence: Miraculous, the relinquishment of the hostess was accomplished without bloodshed

  1. Pacify (verb)

Meaning: to lessen the anger or agitation of (शांत करना)

Synonyms: calm, comfort, console

Antonyms: anger, inflame, infuriate

Sentence: The only thing that would pacify the child and end the tantrum was a new toy.
